Sorry to start a 'back-and-forth' affair, but I recognized this one instantly; it is Gandalf, speaking about his guess that Denethor was in possession of a palantír.

Has anyone else noticed how often the word 'alas' appears in Lord of the Rings dialogues?

And, yes, I've noticed the many instances of "Alas!" as well, and I do like this word! It is not used in every day English anymore, is it?
