this is fun!
I put in "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve!"-Bilbo
the result... I do not know half of you half, as myself to want would have; and I can gain you smaller than half of you half, like.

Looks like that thread HI linked is in a serious need of a "sweeping party".
![]() After a little tour in Europe, Gollum had a new mantra: "My invaluable!" Did he learn a new word for preciouss or was there an inflation period? ![]() Also, Saruman was widely known as a good speaker: "When you were it for me wished unnecessarily do not go men slain." (If you go to war, needlessly, for I did not desire it, then men will be slain.)

All that is gold does not glitter:
All, gold is, sparkles. So, Tolkien was wrong then. |

I translated Galadriel's song...
![]() Original text: (it's from memory, so forgive me if a couple of words are off) I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew. Of wind I sang, a wind there came, and in the branches blew. Beyond the sun, beyond the moon, the foam is on the sea, And by the strand of Ilmarin there grew a golden tree. Beneath the stars of Ever-Eve in Eldamar it shone, In Eldamar beside the walls of Elven Tirion. There long the golden leaves have grown upon the branching years, While here beyond the sundering seas now fall the Elven tears. O Lorien! The winter comes, the bare and leafless day, The leaves are falling in the stream, the river flows away. O Lorien! Too long I have dwelt upon this hither shore, And in a fading crown have twined the golden elanor. But if of ships I now should sing, what ship would come to me? What ship would bear me ever back across so wide a sea? And the fascinating translation: I sang leave, leave gold and leave gold am high for me there. Wind, I, come there sang a wind, and in the establishments roasted. Beyond the sun beyond the moon, the foam rubber on the sea is, And by fibre of Ilmarin to raise a gilded tree. Under stars of Ueberhaupt-Vorabends in Eldamar, it, shone In Eldamar beside the walls of Elven Tirion. There, gilded leaves a long time rose after the years ausbreitenen, During here, beyond sundering of the seas you, fall now Elven breaks violently. O Lorien! The winter comes, the simple one and leafless day, leave being removed in electricity, the rivers of river. O Lorien! I remained too a long time after this one of banks hither, And in a crown fading twined gilded the elanor. But, if ships I sing now, that the ship would come to me? To which me a sea would carry indeed return here so far the ship? |

He was chased by wolves, lost in the forest, escaped in a barrel from the elf king's halls!
It was driven out by Woelfe, lost in the forest, gone ahead in a barrel of the halls of the king eleven! So... Bilbo was apparently driven out by wolves, not chased. Presumably they got Bag End then. And why on earth was he at the front of a hall full of kings... in a barrel? Quote:
