It means that I have got to get a life.
It also means that I have a lot of inside jokes.

I had no ideas of what should my screenname be, so I decided to call myself Glaurung. I've always liked dragons very much, and Glaurung especially. So that's it. Nothing interesting, I must say...
But nice thread, anyway, and interesting, too..

There were five wizards in Middle Earth, Gandalf, Radagast, Saruman (grey, brown, white-ish) Pallando and Alatar (blue). I am the sixth.

On two other posting boards/forums I've used character names from works of fiction. When I decided to register here I thought I'd try to be different even though thinking up names is not something I'm good at. Then it occured to me that if "dúnadan" meant "man of the west" then I could use "Texadan" to mean "man of Texas".

Ghazi means Muslim soldier or warrior. I first read the term while studying the history of the Ottoman Empire. In that context they were generally light-armored horse-archers.

I first heard the name Thoreandan way back in the early 1980s. I heard it while sitting drinking in a tavern. Some rowdy, inebriated adventurers beside me were singing songs of their past battles, treasures, and places they had visited. Then one of them started singing this song, and pretty soon they all joined in...
"Let me tell you about Thoreandan, the man who bit off the dragon's hand. No blows from his sword ever did land, so he bit off the dragon's hand." There were more verses to it, but that was the line that stuck with me the most. The tavern I was in was the Green Dragon tavern, in the City of Xebec's Demise. The City was unlike any place you could imagine. We had all been kidnapped by aliens and brought to this place that they had prepared for us, kind of like a bloddsports arena. It was a kill-or-be-killed place that the aliens populated with their latest abductees to watch us battle it out, often to the death. By now you're all probably thinking "what is this guy smoking?" Let me explain. The City was the first part of a series of Computer Role PLaying Games (CRPG's) called Alternate Reality, produced by Datasoft, and written by Phillip Price of Paradise Programming in Honolulu. It was first released in 1982 (I think) for the old 8-bit Atari computers. It was the predecessor of all CRPG games, and was around long before Castle Wolfenstein or the Ultima series was created. When I read the Tolkien books beginning in January this year (2006), having recently watched the PJ movies, I met up with the Dúnedain Rangers, who reminded me so much of the Adventurers I had met in Alternate Reality. I decided therefore to start writing fan fiction, and specifically to write the story of this Thoreandan (to whom I added the é to make it sound more Elvish), putting him into Middle Earth. So, that is how I became Thoréandan. The Silverleaf part was added much later, in my role-playing on the LOTR Fanatics Plaza website. We have "Plaza Families" there, and I was adopted into the very large and very active Silverleaf family, hence the last name. |

The last part of my name, Redbeard, is referring to my Irish heritage and how I am really an Irishman at heart. The first part of my name was a miss-hap on the keyboard (I was too hasty); it was originally suppose to be Gorin which means "thin tall man" in Comanche. So my name was originally supposed to mean: “thin tall man from Ireland” a good dwarf sounding name, but instead I got a name meaning: “dwarf from Ireland”. Still, that’s not too bad.

Mor-thoron (Sindarin) = Black/Dark Eagle. An Eldar character created in the mid 1990's for a long-running roleplaying tale. Has some of the sardonically nasty characteristics of Eol, but is a far wittier conversationalist. And humble. Did I mention humble?
P.S. Groin -- I could not find that specific definition for your name in any Gaelic/Irish dictionary; however, I did find the word 'groin' in a Scots dictionary, and it means 'to groan or grunt'. The Irish translation for dwarf is 'abhac' I believe.

Belegorn is the 4th Steward of Gondor. I forgot why I chose it, but it means Mighty Tree in Sindarin.

Turns out I haven't replied on this thread.
Aganzir means death love in Adûnaic. I had an RPG character by that name when I was 14-ish, which is also when I started frequenting forums and chatrooms. The character was left behind long ago but the name stuck, and it's still very appropriate for me.

Hey cool thread!
Okay, my name has nothing to do with Lotr. But with a very beautiful prose poetry/philosophy book called "The Prophet" by the Lebanese author Kahlil Gibran. I am neither Lebanese nor a follower of the Islamic faith, but I was given the book by a friend. It is very melancholic and beautiful, the titular Prophet Almustafar has lived in the city of Orphalese for many years and prepares to return to his home. On the way to his ship, he discusses philosophy with a group of people. To me it always seemed the "journey home" of Almustarfar was a metaphor for his death and he tried to impart his wisdom on others before passing on. I also fell in love with the name Orphalese and want to use it as a name for a city, somewhere, somehow. Orphalesion cam from Orphalesian (which I presumed a citizen of Orphalese would be called in modern English, though Orphalesan would have also worked) and then changed the a into an o for aesthetic reasons. Theoretically it could be semi Quenya/Sindarin for "son of Orphalese" |

Pretty much self-explanatory. Though, I'm not entirely sure why I chose Galadriel when my favourite character is Maglor. Maybe it was my attraction to Lórien.

I picked this name for no particular reason, really. No deeper meaning behind it. I probably just liked the way it sounds and was in a hurry.

Literally, my name is the Quenya words for 'shadow' and 'eagle' smooshed together into something that's surprisingly hard to pronounce ('hui' not coming naturally to the English-speaking tongue). My usual translation is 'Eagleshade' these days. More figuratively?
It means the moment when you feel a shadow pass over you, and look up to see the great wings of a Messenger flying on some grand errand. It means the servant of the West who keeps to the shadows, dark-feathered and secret-hearted, but still ever faithful. It means the black murk where even the Eagles dare not go, the darkness that you can taste on every breath as it oozes into you. (It means I was at least bright enough to pick two words from the same language, even if they don't exactly sit together that well...) Ultimately, pretty much exclusively on the internet as far as I know, Huinesoron means... me. Hi. ^_^ hS |

It's the Valarin name for Telperion, the silver half of the Two Trees. I guess I just got tired of using handles that had nothing to do with the subject of the forum, and as I always seem to join them way too late to lay claim to any of the names that usually resonate with me, I figured this was one nobody else would have already taken.

My screen name is well.... not that creative, I was stumped on a name for myself and the quote that is always on the top of the page was about Sam going into Cirith Ungol and the orc was talking about how there was probably an elf or a Gondorian somewhere near, so I thought up the name TheGreatElvenWarrior for myself, which refers to Samwise and is one of my most favourite characters! So I went with it... man that was almost a year ago!
