Hello. I am Folwren. This song I'm about to sing for you is something of a lament from Sam to Frodo after his master left the Shire to be healed across the Western Sea - mourning his departure, but knowing he can't follow yet, but will someday.
The original song is done by Lorena McKennit (the title of that is The Old Ways) and I'm afraid I've fairly plagiarized her lyrics. The lines and stanzas may seem odd, but it fits the tune perfectly. Sung in a clear, strong voice. Celtic style. You Had To Go On the dark summer’s night, near the Western shore I heard your voice singing The elven lights shown Bright stars on this earth, T’was a vision before me. With the music we rode, You were there by my side Down paths so well known - together As we came to the sea, felt the wind in our hair With sadness you paused. Suddenly I knew that you’d have to go, Your world was not mine Your eyes told me so Yet it was there I felt the cross roads of time And I wondered why? As we cast our gaze on the tumbling sea A vision came over me Of thundering hooves And beating wings With torn clouds above. Turning to go, heard you call out my name Like a bird in a cage spreading its wings to fly The old ways are lost you sang as you flew And I wondered why? The pounding sea is calling me home unto you The thundering waves are calling me home unto you |
