One of the themes of LotR is the hobbits, who were previously neutral, being forced to enter into an ancient conflict and choose sides. And many episodes of the story revolve around the characters being forced to a forked place where they must make crucial decisions: Frodo at Bag End when he first learns the nature of the Ring, Frodo at the Council of Elrond, Frodo offers the Ring to Gandalf and later to Galadriel, Frodo at Amon Hen, Aragorn after the death of Boromir, Frodo in Morgul Vale, Samwise in Shelob's Lair (in the chapter The CHOICES of Master Samwise), Frodo at the Cracks of Doom - the list goes on.

I would also like to submit that predestination and personal responsibility (i.e. choice) are by no means contradictory.
