Tom was never one of my favorite characters.
He provided some needed plot points in the book, but I always wished he'd been patterned more after someone like Beorn.
To me, Tom was like some weird hippy.
But that's just my opinion... your mileage may vary.

I never liked Tom that much, and was glad that he was left out of the movies.
