I was just being nasty and allowing for a crazy theory which isn't substantiated by anything in the book. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused. Did he take part in LotR? - Yes!!! Is he a bird? - No Ent? - No Gollum? - No Is he a wose? - We've established above that he's not a Man, which would include the Woses (or Drú-edain); therefore obviously No. Did it help the fellowship in any way? - Yes, I think you could say he was helpful to some of them. EDIT: x-ed with Estanesse (hi, pleased to meet you!), question & answer added above.

Did it pass the dark door? - I suppose you mean the entrance to the Paths of the Dead? No, it (or he) came nowhere near the place.

			...and we have a winner!

Well done, BG - Fatty Lumpkin it is! Take the thread! (To clear up the First Age ambivalence up there: considering that Bombadil has been around for a long, long time and we're never told how old Fatty was, I had that madcap idea that Iarwain Ben-adar's mount could perhaps have been some equally enigmatic long-lived beast along the lines of e.g. Huan or Thorondor; but there's really nothing pointing in that direction beyond his connection with ole Bombadillo, and nothing indicating that he was anything but a regular pony. Sorry if anybody was led astray!)
