I didn't vote either, its such a hard choice! Both are great fellows.

Strider/Aragorn learned what he knew of the world by going out and being IN that world instead of living behind palace walls like most royalty (a generalisation, I know <img src=smile.gif ALT=""> ). That in itself made him a great man.

Mithrandir/Gandalf was very old and very wise and uses his knowledge to fight the enemy in just about any way he can be it magic or giving others the confidence they need to get the job done.

As for Gandalf just leaving at any time, remember that he usually had urgent matters to attend to everywhere, most usually concerning organizing against Sauron. Just think if he had cloned himself <img src=smile.gif ALT="">
