1) The UT reading is actually grammatically fine, just archaic.

2) Agreed, and it was changed in the actual draft, but the 'as' should not be changed to 'was' since that would make the sentence grammatically incorect.

3) I meant for this particular story, not as a general rule. In this particular case, Tolkien did not present it as two equally valid stories, rather they were two different directions he thought about going in. Presenting them as two equally valid stories is thus an editorial choice on our part, just as much as picking one of them. However, I have no issues at this time with how it went, since any of the three options was as valid as any other, and in some ways this is the most complete.
