I always assumed Sauron killed Gil-Galad with his bare hands.

Isildur wrote"The ring misseth maybe,the heat of Sauron's hand,which was black, and yet it burned like fire, and so Gil-Galad was destroyed"

It's been too long since I read The Silmarillion and I don't remember whether it says how or with what sauron killed him.

But he still could certainly have wore a sword.
