Hmm. This concerns me, given that the people who are responsible for the game are likely to have worked with the film-makers. Exactly how can you tell it's Aragorn, Northman?
If you watch the commercial Aragorn is the only one on camera, plus you can see his mouth moving

quote:
If you watch the commercial Aragorn is the only one on camera, plus you can see his mouth moving

Yes, but is that the "This day we fight" bit? If so, I agree that it's Aragorn. If you actually see Aragorn saying any of the rest of the speech, I would certainly be interested to know (I stand to lose a virtual beer on it ).

Hey, Saucepan was never alone! I was always with him! That voice is most definitely Theoden, because it is a bit too gravelly to be Aragorn. When you've seen ALL of Viggo's movies (yes, I know I'm sad) you tend to start recognizing his voice. That was most definitely NOT him.

It`s Aragorn`s, I know it is. I`d recognize his voice anywhere (Viggo Mortenson`s any way). Besides, it does say it is on thelordofthering.net.
meleth nin, Aragorn
Arwen

No - the voice giving the speech is surely Theodéns. Also, that makes a lot more sense in the context of the story.
With regards to agreeing with Saucepanman - I believed he was right all the time. But I really couldn't chime in before I actually saw the trailer!

I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'd bet one Lord of the Rings Anduril reproduction from bladesbybrown.com that it is Aragorn. I agree, some of the footage doesn't all line up with Aragorn's speech. But dude, that is Aragorn making that speech.
However, I do not think it is productive to continue disagreeing on this thread about whether or not it's Aragorn. Most of us have seen the footage, and have differing opinions. Come December 18th, someone will come back and bump this thread and prove me right. Until then, I think it would be in the thread's best interests to stop being bickered on.

You're putting up a good fight, Saucepan Man!
It may not make sense for Aragorn to be saying the speech, but I'm sure it's him simply because of his voice. Listen to the way he says these words: "heart; fails; our; fellowship." It is unmistakably his voice. Compare the "heart" in that speech to the "what does your heart tell you" that he says to Gandalf earlier.

Just because Aragorn says most of the speech doesn't necessarily mean that he says all of it. They could piece the different quotes together to achieve a certain effect. That is the whole idea of a trailer. They put together a bunch of shots (and quotes) from the movie, that really define the movie. If Theoden says one thing and Aragorn says another, and they're both about the same thing, then they will naturally be put together on the Trailer.

quote:
watch the commercial for the game and you see aragoron say, "This day, we fight!"

Of course he does. He does in the trailer too. But it doesn't follow that he says the rest of the speech. Listen to it on the link that I gave earlier (the speech without the images), and you will hear that there is a different character to this last line than to the rest of the speech. That doesn't necessarily mean the speaker is different. But it does suggest that two different speeches have been spliced together.

quote:
No - the voice giving the speech is surely Theodéns. Also, that makes a lot more sense in the context of the story.

quote:
That voice is most definitely Theoden, because it is a bit too gravelly to be Aragorn.

Ah! The game is afoot. Welcome aboard, mollecon and Finwe.
Mollecon is absolutely right about the speech making more sense as Theoden's in the context of the story.

quote:
Until then, I think it would be in the thread's best interests to stop being bickered on

Um, Knight, the purpose of this thread is for people to express their views on who makes that speech. And who's bickering? It's all in good humour, I hope.

I watched the trailer again tonight, and it has to be the same voice all the way through the speech! It is Aragorn's voice. Ah, well. I guess you're right, Knight. It doesn't do any good bickering, as none of us has a way to prove ourselves right. Yet. We will December 17, though!!
Arwen

I thought it was at the Pelennor Fields, and isnt' it the speech where Aragorn says something like, I see fear in your eyes, the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fail, but today we fight...ir something... It looked the PF.

quote:
I thought it was at the Pelennor Fields

No, if Aragorn says the whole speech, then it is at the Black Gate. For it is at the Black Gate that we see him saying "This day we fight!".
Now, in the interests of fairness, I feel that I ought to share this piece of evidence, even though it goes against my argument. While, Christmas shopping ( ) this weekend, I picked up one of the RotK picture books. And it gave a quote which suggested that "This day we fight!" is part of the rest of the speech. And it was on the page dealing with the Black Gate, rather than that concerning the Pelennor.
All of which would suggest that Aragorn makes the entire speech.
Stubbornly, though, I will ask the question that occurs to me. How much can we rely on these picture books?

Since it won't make a difference to the argument I'll just add my voice.
I believe the speach is being done by Aragorn.
I've been studying the trailor. The whole speach ends with "this day we fight." Now I know Saucy feals that is a different speach but I have some evidence to suggest that it's not. Without that last line the speach ends with "but that is not this day." It has no power to it; no finality. Not exactly Hollywood. Also, they have the same concept. It's all talking about what they must do that day.
I also think that it is Aragorn because the movie is called "The Return of the King." Whether we like it or not Aragorn is going to be a big star in this. Therefore, it makes scence that it would be HIS speach that makes the trailor. It's just apart of advertising.
Now, I know I'll never actually prove anything I just know that as soon as I heard that trailor for the first time I knew it was Aragorn.
It just feels right.

Just when you thought this argument is running out of steam, Saucy scores a point.
This is from an upcoming preview of King on Starz where various cast members are interviewed.
Monaghan: My favourite stuff that we did is where we're all lined up waiting, and there's a speech by Bernard Hill, who plays Theoden, who rouses the troops and says, you know, this is the day where we stand and fight.
http://img-nex.theonering.net/movies/WamHolidayMovie4.wmv
H.C.

Hurrah!
A most timely intervention, HC, for I was just beginning to waver.
Now, where's Thenamir with those beers ...
Edit: You know, a thought had occurred to me (gasp!). I was getting concerned about how Aragorn's "This day we fight!" line fitted in so neatly with the rest of the speech. And then I began to wonder whether they edited that on to the image of Aragorn rallying his troops at the Black Gate. Maybe he actually says something different, but they gave him that line in the trailer for effect. The version of the trailer that I have isn't very clear. Can anyone confirm for sure that his lip movements match up to those words?
[ November 19, 2003: Message edited by: The Saucepan Man ]

Sheepishly, the Saucepan Man nods to a nearby waiter, who brings over a tray and places a beer on the table.

"One virtual beer for Thenamir, sir."
The waiter turns to go away, then pauses. With a wry grin on his face, he turns back, reaches onto his tray and places a large plate in front of the Saucepan Man.
"And one massive helping of humble pie for you, sir."

Enough gloating, already.
Surely I deserve some credit at least for correctly predicting Legolas' "RotK stunt" (even though it was in jest), and for correctly identifying the reason for his "He is here" line.

It is most definitely Aragorn's speech. Now that we've seen the movie we can agree. Actually though, I think that it is not the exact same audio that is used in the movie, since Aragorn's voice sounds different. But anyway, in the trailer they have video from Theoden's speech mixed with audio from Aragorn's.
