Sting Movie inspired sterio-types

I didn't know if this should go in the movies section or here. Anyway. I've come to relize how much the movies have had an influence on how we think about the LotR characters. Examples:

Legolas: pritty boy
Aragorn: a manly man who can't stand to take a bath

For some reason I don't think people thought of Legolas or Aragorn this way before the movies. If I'm wrong please tell me. Also, put up more examples if you can think of them.

You're right! The movies did influence how we think of the characters alot differently than we used to. For another example:

Pippin: a complete moron (he's not that stupid in the book)

Sam: a hobbit with no life who's obsessed with Frodo

Faramir: AS CORRUPTED AS HIS BROTHER! (out of anything in the movies, this bothers me the most)

There's more too, but I won't post those now. A good point you brought up, Rose Cotton.

And *cough* showing his funky groove!

And of course, all hobbits are stupid little weaklings who run straight into the arms of their enemies and always yell for someone to help them instead of fighting.

I believe that Frodo only saw the ring a few times in the book, but in the movie it's just popping up everywhere.
Elrond: well, the movies just makes you want to hate him (especially the extended version of FotR.) He seems so impatience and angry, which is unlike an elf.
Treebeard: selfish.
Butterbur: cruel and mean-hearted; doesn't like hobbits.
....and so on, and so forth.
But, yes, the Faramir one did anger me too.

Bilbo - A schitzophrenic old man.

Theoden - A selfish ruler who doesn't give lembas about Rohan.

Frodo - A depressed, angsty guy who when trouble shows up, can only stare at the attacker with huge blue eyes.

Sam - A clingy hobbit with boundary issues. All I could think of.

they make elves out to be a very cold and "holier-than-thou" complex, while in the books they were very lighthearted and nice.

and is it just me, or do you only see like 4 dwarves in the entire movie? It makes it look like dwarves are greedy and only interested in gold and diamonds, and they're only in it because otherwise they'd lose all of their gold.

then it makes hobbits look like wimps witout any backbone, and that they only care about themselves and their shire.

Elrond: THAT'S AGENT ELROND TO YOU, BUSTER!!!(it gets the point across)

Frodo: Moron

Merry: slug who's always eating something and takes up the parts that in my opinion would be better for Pippin!

Pippin: Adorable. Need I say more?

Gandalf: Old&Senile

Arwen: Simmilar to peach or Zelda; just waits and gets rescued, has NO personality!

Gimli: Another moron, less of one than Frodo (Ever notice how one of his eyes is usually wide open while the other one is half-closed?)

Sam: a FRIEND. He was Frodo's GARDENER, not his FRIEND! Plus in the scenes with him&Frodo I kept on being suspicious of some type of plot to somehow include annoying morals such as friends will always be there for you, the world is a happy place with sunshine&butterflies...yah

Sauron: I dunno what he was like, he just got messed up in my mind! HE DOESN'T LOOK LIKE AN EYE *sobs*! That takes the fun out of it!

Boromir: In the book he somehow reminded me of Faramir, tho he's not mentioned in the FOTR. In the movie I got a whole different view of him and I have a respect for his courage and strength (hey, it's hard not to admire anti-heroes!)

Needless to say, lotsa the main characters were- put bluntly- morons. But one thing that outraged me UTTERLY was how they cut out Tom Bombadil and Goldberry! HOW COULD THEY?!?!

Legolas - Surf dude (Cowabunga! )
Aragorn - Indiana Jones, Hans Solo type
Frodo - ow! that hurts (and then he dies)
Sam - Sidekick, regular sidekick
Eowyn - Stereotipical Tom Boy, wants to play baseball instead of dolls (or in this case swordfight)
Merry, Pippin, and Gimli - Comic Relief (hahahaha as they make one stupid joke after another)

C'mon girl! grow a backbone!... ok that was harsh, but arwen needs to realise, the whole world does not revolve around aragorn... well, yeah now i think about it... acctually it does.. ill shut my mouth now and hide in a corner somewhere.

Just to get back on subject (at least seriously) a teensy bit, here's my two cents. I know that the movies caused people to see the characters differently. My knew way of seeing people:

Boromir: in the books, this guy really annoyed me... I mean, he seemed kind of a stuffed-shirt who only cared about himself and his city, plus the fact that he attacked Frodo and then had to go get himself killed, but after the movies, I really like him. I saw the FOTR for the first time and then I really thought about him and realized that he's just a guy trying to do what he thinks is right, but is under a lot of stress, etc...

Faramir: at first, just like everyone else, I was really ticked about the "I'm a jerk, gimme the ring" bit, but then my brother showed me this article he found and now I agree. It was going on about how even in the books, Faramir played good-cop/bad-cop and how he was really just using proven techniques to get Frodo to tell him everything. That is until he went all noble and let him go. But I still see him as a bit of a jerk now.

Arwen: I always liked her until her Arwen-warrior-princess role in FOTR. Now she just annoys me. And then after her exerting ride against the Nine, she just goes home and spends her time sewing and crying to Daddy Elrond about how she wants to see her man. Yeesh.

All Hobbits: I saw them as more their own species and not just shrunken humans with pointy ears and hair feet. The movies just didn't do it for me.

There's more, but this is good for now. Cheers,

Fea

*cough*back on topic not that I don't want to drug Arwen but...

Arwen: Stuck-up, headstrong, idiotic, always needs to be in the picture.

Aragorn: Never take a bath or be hygenic, hydrophobic, really (people are going to hate me) shy, hiding under a rock.

Boromir: Easily obsessed by jewelry.

Frodo: weak, giving-the-ring-to-the-next-person-he meets.

Sam: Obsessive, doesn't believe in evil.

Pippin: Biggest idiot in the world

Merry: Pippin clone with a bit more intelligence.

I'll stop now.
