Sting Flight From Rohan: Discussion Thread

Himaran and Carrûn invite you to play:

Flight from Rohan

Basic Storyline:

Heldór Hildeson was a brave knight from Rohan, who had fought on many battlefields; including Helms Deep in the War of the Ring. His career was abruptly terminated when he was framed for the murder of another knight at Edoras. Though innocent, he was found guilty of the crime and thrown into prison to await his sentence.

Heldór’s elder brother Brytta, has discovered Heldór’s innocence. Gathering around himself a small group of friends, also Rohirrim Knights, he devises a daring plan to break his younger sibling out of prison and deliver him safely to Bree from where he can attempt to hide out in the North Downs until the true killer can be brought to justice and the knight pardoned. Though they realize that taking part in this plan could very well cost them their lives, several of the brother’s friends agree to help. Only Brytta knows the exact name of the killer, but all are convinced of the accused man’s innocence.

They travel along the Old South Road through the Gap of Rohan, but are unfamiliar with the Western territories past that. Lost in the region of Eregion, they encounter a dark Ranger going by the pseudonym of Awyrgan. He offers to help them re-orient themselves and reach Bree, but refuses to get involved further in the situation, not bothering or wanting to know why the party is fleeing.

Fréa Forgoil, the murderer, had volunteered to guard Heldór and was on duty when he escaped. Too embarrassed to report it to the King personally, Fréa sets out after him with his two brothers. They track and harass the friends along the Old South Road and the two groups are set to eventually clash somewhere outside of Bree.

The Purpose of the Story is:

Free Heldór from prison and escort him out of Rohan, north along the Old South Road to Bree.

This means that we will know the story is over when:

1. The Knights and Heldór arrive at Bree and determine where Heldór is going to stay.
2. The story will not discuss the fate of Fréa or whether Heldór ever gets to return home.

Starting Locations: Edoras

Likely Destination: Bree

Timeframes:

1. This game takes place in the 4th Age during the year 1432 Shire Reckoning.

2. The story itself or plot covers about two months.

3. This game requires a time commitment of 6 - 8 weeks from the game owners and the major players.

Characters Needed:

NOTE: EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE MURDERER AND HIS BROTHERS, AND EXCLUDING AWYRGAN, NEEDS TO OWN A HORSE. (AWYRGAN WILL “OBTAIN” ONE AS NECESSARY)

1.Three Knights of Rohan (friends of the two brothers). Most likely male, but a single shield maiden might work into the story as a relative or close friend of the brothers.

2.The Forgoil Family – Three Characters:

a. Fréa Forgoil, the murderer: A knight from Rohan. He will lead the force that is searching for Heldór, knowing that until he is dead there is always a chance that the truth about the crime may come out.

Fréa slew a fellow knight during a drunken fight. He then covered up the crime by hiding the dead man in Heldór’s quarters. When the dead man was discovered, Heldór was immediately accused. The murderer should often chuckle to himself over how easily he framed the crime on Heldór.

Fréa is not altogether evil, more a man caught in a downward spiral of events and attempting to save himself in the easiest manner he can find.

b. Fréa’s first Brother: This character needs to be slightly older then Fréa

c. Fréa’s second Brother: This character needs to be slightly younger than Fréa, and just as, if not more evil. He is a small, “birdlike” man.

The three brothers will argue, fight, and generally pick on the youngest. Have fun coming up with their odd fraternal behavior.

A final character possibility is another guard of Rohan sent along with the Forgoil brothers on their quest to catch the fleeing men. However, he may have his doubts about his companions…(potential plot twist, etc. possibility)

Characters That Do Not Belong: Anything other than the ones mentioned.

The game owners will each play one major character (A Knight of Rohan and the Ranger), and any minor characters (i.e. residents of Bree) that may be necessary to complete the plot.

_____________________________________________

Himaran’s Character:

Name: Brytta Hildeson

Gender: Male

Race: Man, Rohirrim.

Age: 38 (His younger brother is 28)

Appearance: Brytta has blond hair, short for his race, and is fairly tall. Strong, quiet, and an excellent warrior he wears brown clothing with a black belt trimmed with gold, and dark leather boots. He has a slight limp in his left leg from an accidental wound he received during a training exercise, and prefers to ride rather than walk. He is often seen with a silver ring on his right hand, a gift from his mother.

Weapons: When riding, Brytta wields a long spear. He always carries a short axe on his belt, along with a knife. The Rohirrim is often seen with his short sword, his prize weapon and (as the eldest) a family heirloom.

History: Brytta had lived a happy life with his family, working on their farm as a young man, up until the fateful orc raid that changed his life completely. His parents were slain in the assault, and he escaped to Edoras. Later on with his younger brother he was among the defenders at Helms Deep. Both survived and served under the new king Eomer for several years by the time Heldór was arrested for suspected murder. Feeling responsible for his younger brother, Brytta now hopes to help him escape; even if it means sacrificing his career and life.

_____________________________________________

Carrûn’s Character:

Name: Awyrgan

Gender: Male

Race: Man, Ranger

Age: 30

Appearance: Awyrgan is of average height, shorter than many Rangers, but his overall presence makes him seem taller. He is powerfully built with jet-black hair, wears dark and weathered clothing, and his overall appearance is very forbidding. He looks much older than he is, but his eyes give away his true age. His eyes are green, but blaze red when angry and his gaze is said to bed pained, but also one of the most insightful and piercing of his time. He can move like a shadow and while he has no supernatural capabilities he has often been compared to a wraith. He has a limited ability to communicate without words. On his left index finger is a black ring with a green jewel in the center that he received from his father. He is a skilled hunter and tracker, and is deeply in touch with the nature that surrounds him in his travels.

Weapons: He carries a long sword with which he is very skilled, but often prefers to use one of his three knives. One is in his belt, another on his chest, and a third strapped to his boot. He sometimes carries a bow, and can use one when need be. He wears a black mail shirt under his cloak but seldom wears any other armor.

History: Awyrgan was born into the tribes of the Rangers of the North, the nephew of Halbarad. However, his father quarreled with his Uncle and led a small group of Rangers and their families away from the main camps. He grew up in a small nomadic tribe with little knowledge of his heritage. When his father died, he was still young but was made chieftain of the group and inherited his father’s ring. Shortly after, he returned with a companion from a hunting trip to find his village burned and all of his people, including his wife and unborn child dead. His companion killed himself in despair while Awyrgan watched. He then attempted vainly to pursue the wild men who had destroyed his home but was unable to do so.

Returning in a state of mental disarray he set about burying the dead. When he buried his wife he took the ring he had given her, heated it in the fire, and burned a scar into his face as a memory of his failure. He also gave himself the name Awyrgan, meaning “condemned one” or “strangled.” He wandered aimlessly until he was found by a group of Rangers and thus rejoined his people. He rode with his uncle on the Paths of the Dead and met Aragorn but did not give him his real name. He fought in the battle of Pellanor Fields but his only real function was to stand guard over the body of his dead uncle.

After the war he chose to leave the camps of the Rangers and live on his own, but maintained his contact with them. He found work as a guide, tracker, and occasionally a sell-sword. He is a skilled orator and will often tell stories of his travels during his stops at various Inns. He is fond of the Shire and usually remains close to it, but has traveled as far south as Umbar and even lived for a time in the wastelands of Mordor; the one land he chooses not to tell tales about. He speaks many tongues and is friends (and enemies) with many people of all races.

First Post for the Game

It was a rowdy night at the White Horse Inn. Flushed faces laughed uproariously as card games (and money) were won and lost, and rounds of drinks bought for the victors and the vanquished alike. The fire blazed and stung the eyes of those who came too close to its hearth. Outside it was quiet as the stars shone down on the still night in Rohan. A stray breeze whistled through the tall grass as if to signify that something was about to occur.

Inside three brothers sat bemoaning their misfortunes at the card tables for the night. The small birdlike member of the party turned to the one in the center, as if he was the natural leader of the group. “Fréa, we need to be going.” “Aye,” the other answered. Rising from his chair he turned and paid their fee, borrowing a few coins from the silent one of the trio, whose facial lines marked him as the eldest. As he made his way to the door Fréa was met by a stumbling, gray-haired man who fell heavily against his shoulder knocking the pair to the ground in the doorway. Fréa’s eyes blazed as he gathered himself up off the floor. “Thou art an old drunken fool! If your own eyes cannot guide you perhaps you should obtain a walking stick and use it to find your way!”

The old man looked through bleary eyes at him and shook his head. “Young one, you have much to learn…” He drawled off as Fréa’s hand rose, only to be caught by his eldest brother. “Come Fréa.” Cursing, Fréa was led outside. As the youngest of trio passed the old man, he gave him a shove that sent him out the doorway.

The three were walking somewhat unsteadily when they were hailed from behind. Rapidly approaching them was the old man, demanding an apology. He grasped Fréa’s collar, asking in loud tones if this was how they treated all of the men who had done their time in the King’s service. Fréa’s eyes turned bright red, and his memory went hazy as his fists flew into the man, pummeling him into the ground. His boots found a target and ribs cracked.

When he regained his senses his two brothers were dragging him behind a shed. He was covered in blood, his own and that of the man. “Fréa, that was incredible!” His younger brothers eyes were shining. “Fool! You’ve killed a man, you’ve killed old Folca.” his older brother snapped. Fréa found that his hands were shaking nearly uncontrollably as he rose to his feet. His fingers were dripping red. Walking over he found the old man lying in a pool of blood. He had to act. He had to act fast. “Help me.” He ordered his brothers. Neither of them moved. “Help me!” Slowly they followed him and helped him sling the old man over Fréa’s shoulders.

They passed stealthily through the rest of the town following their leader until he arrived at their destination. “This is the hut of the scoundrel that cost me a month’s wages tonight,” Fréa explained. Pushing the door open quietly, they filed in, the youngest holding a lit candle. They placed the old man so that he would appear hidden, but could easily be found with a little effort. Cleaning up their tracks they exited. Fréa suddenly felt calm, as if a great weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He allowed himself a soft laugh. “This may even work to our advantage.” Behind him his younger brother gave a cackle but the oldest wore a mask of grim defeat. Fréa turned. “Come, I believe father still has a few old bottles of last year’s brew left. Let us celebrate our card victory.”

And as the trio walked off towards their distant home the moon shone red on a young Rohirrim saying goodnight to the barmaids before he left for the evening.

^*^*^*^*^

“May I see him now, sir?”

“Yes, but remember; he may be your brother, but he is a criminal and a murderer. Do not think that he will be at all pleased to see you. He knows his fate; the penalty for murdering a former servant of the king is death.”

Pushing the guard’s words aside, as well as the man himself, Brytta Hildeson strode into the dungeon where his brother Heldór was being kept. As he sat down on a block outside the cell, his brother looked up and gave him a faint smile, attempting to throw some levity into his dire predicament. “Glad to see you, brother. What is life like outside this box that I’m living in?”

“Keep your voice down. It will be far better once you’re out of here.”

“What do you mean by that, Brytta? I’ll be out of this cell soon enough, but not by your hands.”

“Listen, Heldór. I can’t explain right now, but I know who murdered old Folca, and it certainly was not you. Several of my friends and I are going to break you out tomorrow. I’m not going to let you be executed just because of the cowardice of a lone man and his wretched siblings.”

“It sounds lovely, but where shall I go? If I am caught…”

“We’re going north. I have a plan to help us get you safely out of Rohan, and from there we will follow the Old South road to a small town called Bree. I can find you a place to stay there. Hopefully, I can prove who the true murderer was, and have you pardoned.”

Reaching through the bars, Heldór clasped his brother’s hand in a tight grip. “Thank you Brytta, thank you for everything you’ve done to help me; before and now.”

^*^*^*^*^

That night, Brytta ran along a path toward the White Horse Inn, stumbling over rocks and rotting logs in his haste. In his cloak the Knight carried a crude map of the prison area, complete with the markings of an escape route he had created.

Finally reaching his destination, Brytta hurried inside and found a booth in the back of the Inn, a virtually deserted area. Retrieving the map, he looked over it one last time while he waited for the others to arrive.

FIRST POSTS BY GAME MEMBERS:

The game will begin with Brytta stealing a map of the prison level and arriving at an assigned meeting area. Therefore, first posts by Knights of Rohan need to include a brief journey to the meeting site (a table in the back of the White Horse Inn), from wherever you were, and your arrival at the site.

DETAILS FOR MURDERER’S FIRST POST:

You are the one guarding Heldor inside the prison. Your first post needs to be some form of harassing Heldor while guarding him, but be inventive. Perhaps make jokes about his predicament and probable execution, or eat the food that you were supposed to give him. Be mean, as mean as possible without physically harming him.

We will not be requiring Fréa's Two Brothers to write a first post. They will not come in until later in the game, once Heldor has escaped and Frea asks for your help to track him down.

Submitting this for:

Amanaduial the Archer

Have you ever played in an RPG at the Barrow Downs? – YES
Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES – Which one? Both

Name: Archim Forgoil (said Ar-kim)- the younger brother

Age: 28 (a few years younger than Fréa, I’m not sure how much. Obviously therefore flexible on this point

Gender: Male

Race: Man, Rohirrim

Appearance: Archim is quite small, only about 5 ft 5, and quite wiry. His hair is surprisingly dark for one of the Rohirrim, and always seems to be greasy, and he has a habit of fiddling with one lock just behind his ear when nervous. His hair is in a middle parting, and is rather uneven, cut quite short. His dark brown eyes are quite narrow and have a tendency to dart around, and he has quite a sharp nose. These two things, along with his slim face and wiry build often put people in mind of a bird- not like a dove, more like a small scrawny crow. Wears darker clothing often, and very little jewellery- certainly any fine jewellery would have been taken by his brothers already. Just wears a thin gold chain which he took from an unconscious customer in a bar after a brawl and which he has managed to keep hidden from his brothers. Left handed.

Weapons: Two small daggers, which he is very handy with, one worn on his left side on his belt, in view, the other concealed under his cloak in his belt behind his back, out of sight- can be quite useful when people think they can rob the little, bird like man. His brothers know of it though- he cannot use it against them, for if they attempt to hit him, they are always careful to keep his left hand in sight. Also carries a short sword, which he is adequate with. He is better with his daggers, as they have the element of surprise because they are so small, because there are two of them, and because most opponents generally watch his right hand.

Archim and his brothers spend a lot of time arguing and fighting, and the other two generally pick on Archim. He tends to treat Fréa as the leader, because he is so decisive and stubborn, and because his quick temperedness means that it is best to stay on the right side of him. Archim is constantly trying to impress his brothers, to prove that he is as good as them, and backs Fréa on everything. His brothers have a tendency to call him ‘crow’, something which irritates him no end, but he doesn’t usually retaliate. Has quite quick mind, and is generally a few steps ahead of his opponent in a fight or argument, but is also rather pessimistic. He envies and dislikes Brytta and has done for years- when young, Brytta wouldn’t play with or hang around with ‘Crow’, and Archim became convinced that the other was spreading rumours about him and turning others against him. As time went by, Brytta far was better than Archim at sword fighting, and was tall and strong especially beside scrawny Archim, and on the night that the old man was murdered, he caught Archim cheating in a card game (a usual occurrence- cheating that is, not getting caught), losing him a fair sum of money. That is why it made it all the sweeter that it was Brytta’s own brother who was framed for the murder.

Despite his wiry frame and not being an excellent swordsman, Archim is a very skilled horseman, and owns a black horse who a travelling ranger, scorning Archim, named Korkoroch (Crow-horse) and the name seems to have stuck.

Thumbs up

I am in: Corsairs and Corsets and Hunt for the Dragon, but the last one mentioned is ending today.. Those are my first two.

I haven't posted in The Green Dragon nor the White Horse Inn..

Name: Liol

Age: 31

Gender: Female

Race: Shield maiden of Rohan

Weapons: Liol didn't use to carry weapons a child. But soon she learned that a weapon might come in need. Her father bought her a sword. It's long and thin. The blade is silver and it's very sharp. Liol aslo consideres her horse Lannra, as a weapon, because it's willing to take her anywhere she might ask.

Appearence: Liol is not very pretty. She has brown eyes, her face is small and very thin. And when that big hair of hers grows even bigger, she looks like a mouse. Her body is thin and slender. She is not very tall either. People can therefore, misgudge her and think she is the worst warrior ever, that she will show you, is not true.

Personality/Strenghts/Weaknesses: Liol has a very strong will. She is not letting any obstacles make her turn away, when she has started something she consideres as important. Quick thinking and loyal are also two words you can use to describe her. She is very bad tempered and her tounge is as sharp as any blade. Her greatest strenght is though, her sword skills. And the fact, that people misgudge her is helping a lot. (The enemy not knowing how good sheis.) Liol's greatest weakness is perhaps her social life. She is not a very outgoing person. She doesn't like to have conversations with others, than her family. Only family members are her friends and only them will reach in to her mind.

History: Liol has no a lot of history, since she is only in her early 30's.
Liol grew up in Rohan, and she loves it there. As a warrior for Rohan she has been taking part in many perilious adventures. In The War of The Ring she missed out. She was sick, and everyone thought she would die. Yet again, was it her strong will who saved her.

_____________________________________________

Novnarwen's post

"What? Is it true?" Liol's voice was both alarming and desperate. She just couldn't believe it. The lady stood talking to herself. A note had just been left at her residence by her cousin Brytta. How can it be? she thought. In the little note, Brytta had left for her, was about Brytta's brother. "You have to come, we are saving him from the prison," she read out quite loud. She felt the rage inside her grow, and Liol discovered that she was growing quite red. She looked at the note, and knew exactly what to do. She had to go, follow Brytta and save Heldór. This situation was caused by a false accusation and Liol felt she had to get a grip on this whole thing. Liol wasn't going to sleep properly before she had her cousins safe and sound, not in a prison, just anywhere else.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About thirty minutes later she was on her horse, riding very fast. "How could this possably happen?" Liol couldn't think about that now, anyhow. She had better not wasting time on finding an answer now, she had to wait, until she met Brytta Liol concluded and rode on.
Brytta had sent word for her, she had to wait and see, and then they both could figure out what to do, that was all she knew for now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The White Horse was seated right by the road, taking every traveller in, as it was a good Inn for resting. Liol jumped off her horse, and walked for the door. Inside it was quite dark. Only a few lamps in the roof, which gave a little idea where the tables, chairs and the fireplace was. Liol stepped forwards and met an old man standing behind the desk.

"I am looking for Brytta," she said in a low voice. Liol wasn't comfortable talking with strangers. An old man was the last on her 'want-to-talk-too' list. He looked at her, and laughed.

"What is a young lady, like yourself, here, at an Inn?"

How dared he, of all, say she wasn't welcome here? I have got to punch that man, she thought with herself. The old man stirred at her, actually expecting an answer, Liol thought. For a few moments she just stood there glaring at him. Are all Inn keepers like that, she thought. Liol remembered back, when she had visited another Inn, and she was actually kicked out. Liol shuddered. Well I am not going to be kicked out tis time, she thought by herself. I am a decent woman. Liol searched for an answer, while the Inn-keeper grew more and more imaptient.

"I want to talk to Brytta, not you," she said in kind of a harsh voice. The Inn-keeper didn't believe his ears, but could nothing else then to point at a table in the eastern corner. "There," he mutterd. She nodded and turned on her heels. The Inn-keepee gazed at her while walking to the pointed table with his mouth pen.

"Brytta," she cried at the man, sitting quite uneasy on a chair. He jumped up and greeted her.

"I got your note," Liol said, and the man gave a nod.

Fréa’s first Brother

Character Description Form:

Have you ever played in an RPG at the Barrow Downs? – well, I'm finished with The Hunt of the Dragon the 10th of July, and I'm also doing Corsairs and Corsets.

How many RPG’s on the Barrow Downs are you currently involved in? This would be my third, but since the Hunt of the dragon is finished tomorrow, I guess we count that as two....

Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES
Which one? The Green Dragon Inn (did it today actually)

For your character please include:

NAME: Graitwa Forgoil

AGE: 47

RACE: Man

GENDER: Male

WEAPONS: He is kind of flexible when it comes to weapons. He can use knives, swords and isn't really bad with bow either. As his little brother he always carries his knives in a belt. When he doesn't wear the belt he has his sword with him, he thinks it could come in handy.

APPEARANCE: Graitwa is a very large man, his shoulders are wide and he is considered to be quite tall. His musache and hair are dark indeed and he has a very frightening face, espcially in the drak. He has big dark eyes and huge eyebrows, which are easy to notice.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: He is a very silent person. It is almost like you wonder if he could talk sometimes. He is not very social and doesn't trust people easily. He loves to pick on his youngest brother, and doesn't think he takes harm of it. Therefore you could say he is very unthoughful. His strenghts are many; because of the large man he is he gets benefits that a small man wouldn't have. He is good with weapons and a talented horseman. He doesn't think he has weaknesses, but other people would consider that as one.

He has a black fine horse that he rides. It's called Drakwing. The name has no paticular meaning.

History: He as the oldest one of the brothers doesn't remeber his parents. He ran of when he was quite young. After he'd ran of he hs been traveling around in the wilderness. He came back to his home in later days and gained friends with his brothers. He consider them as his only family.

Novnarwen, could you edit your post to explain in a little more detail how Liol knows Heldór and Brytta?

Also, it's more likely that Brytta would have simply left a note at her residence than sent a messenger; based on the secret nature of their business.

Other than that, looking good.

Edit: If you went ahead and put your first post in the thread don't worry about sending it in a PM, we can be flexible, regardless of what some might tell you Himaran is actually a pretty nice laid back guy.

Aman, I'd say yes, but because it's a co-owned RPG I have to wait for Himaran's $0.02 as well. That goes for all characters.

NOTE TO ALL: Most likely, if you sign up for a character you'll probably get it but to give more people a chance we are going to hold off on final decisions until we have almost all the character slots filled. (If that's a no-no as far as the moderators are concerned I'll remove my post and insert foot into mouth. I have a self-confessed flaw of being a perfectionist so I apologize in advance).

Carrun,

That's perfectly fine. You and Himaran are the game founders so you can set the requirements for joining as long as all people are treated equally.

Good luck with the new game. I read the proposal and thought it was good. Your revised version is even better!

Orofaniel - probably, Himaran and myself will be making the final decisions over the remainder of the week or so and then release all of the chosen players names at once.

When it says that one can only be involved in 3 RPGs at one time, does that include Rohan and Gondor or just the Shire? Does it also include the RPG one owns?

For example: If someone owned one RPG was participating in two in the Shire and one in Rohan could she still participate in this fabulous RPG that Himaran and Carrun have started?

Probably not but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Hmmm. sounds like an interesting story. I may submit a profile for "A final character possibility..." He is a former Dúnedain Ranger whose mother was from Rohan, and he was there at the White Horse and could ride "along with the Forgoil brothers on their quest to catch the fleeing men. However, he may have his doubts about his companions…(potential plot twist, etc. possibility)

Anyway, I put it out there for your consideration. I'll PM a first post to Himaran and Carrûn.
(It would be necessary that Hanasían and Awyrgan would have known each other as Hanasían was 29 at the time of the War.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
I would IM Himaran, but he hasn't posted yet so I can use the little icon.
Here is what I submit:
Character for your approval for this part: A final character possibility is another guard of Rohan sent along with the Forgoil brothers on their quest to catch the fleeing men. However, he may have his doubts about his companions…(potential plot twist, etc. possibility) in the RP Flight from Rohan.
Character Description Form:
Have you ever played in an RPG at the Barrow Downs?
YES - Corsairs & Corsets
How many RPG’s on the Barrow Downs are you currently involved in?
1 (not counting the Inn)
Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? –
YES - Green Dragon
For your character please include:
NAME: Hanasían
AGE: 42
RACE: Man (Dúnedain/Rohirrim)
GENDER: Male
WEAPONS: Sword, bow, knife
APPEARANCE: 6 feet and about 200 lbs, muscular, sandy long brown hair, and wears black leather breeches, boots, and vest with bare arms for mobility.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Hanasían is rather quiet, but says what he means when he does speak. He handles a horse well, and is an excellent bowman from a mount as well as standing. He could move with great stealth for a man and was hardened by what he had seen and done during the war.
HISTORY: Born somewhere near Lake Evendim in the year TA 2990 (1390 Shire Reckoning) He was the second of three children of Halasían, Ranger of the North, and Lady Forcwyn of Rohan. His brother was much older than he, and he would not meet him until the battle of the Corsairs in the War of the Ring, and he would only see his younger sister on occasion, for he started to ride with the Rangers at a fairly young age and the times were ever darkening. He learned much skill from the Rangers, many o f the elder ones knew his father, and he also learned the arts of the bow and movement from Helladin, an elf friend from Rivendell. These skills made him pretty good at covert ops before, during, and after the war and unlike his father, he was relativly good hearted. Having rode with the Grey Company in the war, and having assisted Rohan during the battles of the Isen before meeting up once again with Halbarad and the Rangers riding south, he came to know his mother's people, and was glad when they again came to live in Rohan. it was during one of these times he was visiting his sister that he came to be at the White Horse Inn catching up with some veterans of Rohan...
Edit: I will have to bow out of this RP and withdraw my character from consideration as my time allocation to RPs is limited and I wish to concentrate on the one I'm in (Corsairs & Corsets). I thank Carrun and Himaran for their consideration of my character for the part applied for. I will keep an eye on the read of this fine story, and will say my part in this RP was limited to be one of the many drinking at the Inn.
Sincerely,
Rich (Snowdog)
The 3 game limit does apply to all of the RPG forums - and includes games played in and owned - since it is assumed you will be playing in your owned game.
2-Corsairs and Corsets and A house Divided. Hunt for the Dragon is ending tomorrow.
Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES – Both
For your character please include:
NAME: Rochil (1 OF THE 3 KNIGHTS)
AGE: 36
RACE: Soldier of Rohan
GENDER: Male
WEAPONS: Rochil has a spear that he uses when on horseback. It is made out of brown wood and its tip is green. He also has a sword. Craven on the hilt is the shape of a horse is craven. It rests in a leather sheath. Rochil also carries half a dozen small throwing knives in a pouch on his belt. He also has a silver helmet with the horse design, which he wears while riding. He is more skilled with his spear than his sword but he can wield both.
APPEARANCE: Rochil is tall. He has blonde hair usually worn tied back. He has light blue eyes. He has no scars and is strong. He wears Black pants and a brown tunic, which is covered by a weatherworn leather vest. Hi also has sturdy brown boot. He wears a leather belt that carries the pouch he keeps his throwing-knives in and the sheath of his sword. Not to mention his pipe.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Rochil is a strong and brave man. He is quite headstrong, and determined. Once he starts something he will always finish it. He is friendly to those he knows but he shuns outsiders. He is very loyal to the King of Rohan. He isn’t the most social nor outgoing. He is quick thinking as well as quick-tempered. He also thinks almost anything is funny.
HISTORY: Rochil was born in Rohan. He became a soldier of Rohan at age 20. He took place in the events during the War of the Ring such as the battle at Helm’s Deep and the Battle of Pelennor Fields which he miraculously survived both with little injury. His younger brother however was slain in the battle at Helm’s Deep. He had served under King Theoden and now King Eomer.
With the ever-growing darkness in the south, Rochil’s parents and older brother decided they were going to move north to Bree. Rochil and his younger brother would not move to Bree and leave the land they loved where they had both become soldier. He now lives in Edoras alone. It was here where he met Brytta Hildeson and his family. They became friends.
When Heldór was accused of murder Rochil knew that Brytta felt responsible for him. That’s why Rochil accepted Brytta's summons. No matter what happens, because he is not only loyal to his King and his home but to his friends.
Also he ahs a horse named Rowan
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Here my first post:
Rochil sat down to read the note left at his door. It was from Brytta. Rochil reread the letter. Heldór accused for murder! He would never do such a thing. Rochil read on. Meet me at the White Horse Inn . Brytta needed his help and Rochil new he had to go. Rochil got ready and ran outside to get his horse Rowan ready. He patted his chestnut horse, and he rode of towards the White Horse Inn.
Rochil hoped of his horse and let him graze.
“Well here I am” Rochil said not caring who heard. He entered the inn. It was filled with many people. Rochil squeezed around people until he reached the desk. Behind it sat the old innkeeper. Not the politest fellow.
“I need to speak with Brytta. Has he arrived?” Rochil asked in a demanding voice.
“Brytta sure seems to be popular,” He laughed “Probably because his brothers in jail.” Rochil was confused and not in the least bit amused.
“I do not care to be educated about his popularity. Now show me where he is!” Rochil ordered. The innkeeper stopped laughing.
“Over there” he said pointing to a table where Brytta sat. He wasn’t alone.
“Brytta” Rochil said as he neared the table. “I got your message. I’m sorry bout your brother, I know he would never do such a thing.” Rochil sat down.
For your character please include:
NAME: Aldwulf Wilfridson
AGE: 28
RACE: Man of the Mark (one of the three Knights)
GENDER: Male
WEAPONS:
Short sword, Spear, long-knife; iron helm; plain metal buckler (small round shield)
APPEARANCE:
Height – 5’ 9” (1.75 M); 155 lbs (70 kg). Brown eyes; dark blond hair, shoulder length; clean shaven except for a thick, light brown mustache whose ends extend just beyond his lower lip. Medium frame, muscular; tanned from working outdoors; hands are calloused and rough from working with the family horses; bears a small puckered scar across his left cheek from an Orc blade at the Battle of the Hornburg. Dark brown homespun breeches secured by a plain brown leather belt with plain brass buckle; natural off-white tunic; scuffed, brown leather, knee high boots with riding heel; brown flecked with black and grey hooded cloak; tan, work stained riding gloves; no jewelry.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES:
A cautious young man who keeps his thoughts to himself unless asked for his opinion. Not easily swayed by the crowd, he prefers to gather facts and think about how he will respond to a situation. He is devoted to his small group of boyhood friends, and next to the company of his horses, he prefers to spend his time with them. Slow to anger, but once aroused, is single-minded and capable of great cunning in his pursuit of retribution. This is also a weakness in that his natural inclinations shift away from his own safety needs as his focus narrows.
HISTORY:
Fifth child in a family of six children. Mother and Father still living now on the horse farm managed by him and his three brothers; the two older, of whom, have wives and families. His two sisters are married and live near. Aldwulf is several times over an Uncle, and much to the despair of his parents, has no interest in wedding someone and starting a family of his own. They are aghast that his youngest brother is of the same mind, and wish that Aldwulf would set the good example for him.
He was fifteen years old when he fought in the Battle of the Hornburg, side by side with his childhood friend, Heldor. It was he, in fact, who diverted the Orc’s blade enough that it only cut Aldulf’s cheek, and did not kill him. There is nothing he would not do to see to the safety of his boon companion.
Aldwulf still serves in the ranks of the Riders of the Mark when called upon and is committed to his King, Éomer. His family is one of the ones who supply the horses needed for the knights of the Riddermark.
Envinyatar’s post
‘Osric! Lend me a hand here, man! I can’t lift these wheels myself.”
The bright midmorning sun blazed down on the square before the smithy, throwing the shadow of the straining man into stark relief against the packed earth. Aldwulf wiped his forearm along his brow and looked up, frowning, for the whereabouts of his younger brother. He was nowhere to be seen, and Aldwulf grew increasingly irritated at being left to wrestle the huge oak wheels himself. Shirt off to catch what breeze he could, sweat glistened on the straining muscles of his arms as he fought to pull the cumbersome wheel from the flat wagon’s bed and stand it on its rim to be rolled into the smithy.
They had come to the outskirts of Edoras, the city proper, to have the great wheels of the hay wagon rebanded by the blacksmith. As was usual, Osric had seen a group of his acquaintances and gone running off to see them, promising his older brother he would only be a moment. Moments stretched into quarters and halves of the hour, and still no sign of him. Aldwulf commandeered the smithy’s boy to give what help he could and together they got the two wheels into the blacksmith’s shop.
It was late afternoon by the time the smith had finished and the wheels were secured in the wagon for the trip home, an hour’s ride south along the Snowbourn River . . . and still no sign of Osric. Aldwulf sat on the bench in the shade of the spreading elm, calming himself with a pipe full of Westmansweed and a pint of local ale brought out by the smithy’s daughter.
A fair one, that one is! he could hear his mother saying, and her father’s only child. She’ll bring a large endowment into the marriage she makes. And the forge along with her when the smith looks to hanging up his hammer! he could hear his father chime in. He ran his pipe-stem along his bottom lip, watching her as she smiled at him, then hurried away. Pretty enough, he thought to himself, idly, wondering how she would fare away from the city, on their farm.
His thoughts were cut off with the hurried arrival of his prodigal sibling. Words of remonstrance were on Aldwulf’s lips until he noted the paleness of his brother’s face and his wide eyes. ‘Sit down,’ he said to the out of breath Osric, pulling the younger man down beside him. ‘Tell me what’s gotten you so upset.’
Over the next few moments, Osric delivered the news he had learned from Brytta just previous to his returning to Aldwulf and the wagon. A murder had been committed – old Folca had been killed, and Heldór stood accused of it. He had been arrested by the city guard and thrown into the dungeon to await execution.
Aldwulf’s face was grim as he listened to the news of his friend. ‘This cannot be!’ he said in a low voice. ‘Heldór is no craven to have murdered an unarmed old man, and one who had spent time in the service of the King.’
‘Brytta shares your faith in his brother, Aldwulf.’ Osric looked about for any unwelcome listeners. ‘He has asked me to tell you he would like to meet with you tonight . . . to discuss the situation. The White Horse – he said you would know the table.’
Aldwulf rubbed his chin, thinking quickly. He bade his brother take the wagon back to the farm. ‘Tell them nothing of what you have just told me, Osric. Just say that I met some old friends, with much new to catch up on. Tell them I will return soon, and not to worry.’ He clapped his brother on the shoulder. ‘Make it convincing.’
He saw his brother off, and sat for a long time, thinking, on the bench beneath the elm. When the sun had set, he stood and tapped his cold pipe out against the trunk of the tree. Placing it in the pouch that hung from his belt, he drew his cloak on and made his way quickly to the Inn.
There in the dark, back corner sat Brytta, his hands cupping a pint of ale – gazing into it as if to discern the course of events he was about to set in motion. Aldwulf advanced toward the table, and catching Brytta’s eye, nodded briefly to him.
‘I’m here,’ he said in a low voice, leaning across the table as he sat down. ‘Heldór – what are we to do for him . . .?’
Snowdog, check your Private Messages.
Earwen, your first post should be about receiving Brytta's summons and making your way to the Inn to discuss escape plans.
All - You will all probably receive at least one response from me regarding things that might need to be changed/improved in your character descriptions/posts. I can't help it, my mom studied English for 9 years in college and her nitpicking wore off onto me. Just ask Himaran. Just remember it will make the game run smoother if everyone is on the same track.
Any others looking for him to send a PM: he's on page 3 of The Summons RPG.
Carrûn and Himaran
It would help me immensely if everyone would simply put their first posts beneath their Character descriptions.
That way, when it comes time to open the game, all you need do is give me a list by writer's name of what order you want the initial posts in, and I will place them as I open the game.
EVERYONE
If you find an 'edit' by me on your post - I'm just putting it in an easy format for me to transfer to the RPG Thread itself.
Himaran, Carrun,
I am terribly sorry to say my mother is being rather difficult at this stage. To cut this story short, she has told me I can't go on the computer at all during the week- not on any weekday for the next 3 months.
I know it isn't reasonable therefore to hold my place in your RPG. It would mean only being able to post on Saturday and Sunday, days which I am usually quite busy anyway. As this is, I am therefore very sorry to say I won't be able to play. Damned shame, as I was looking forward to this- I have very few downs RPs going at the moment.
I wish you every sucess with this RPG, and others in the future, and I'm sure this one certainly will suceed- it looks to be a good show.
Yours, apologetically,
The former Archim Forgoil,
Amanaduial
Sorry to hear that, I've been through a simliar experience actually.
So we still need Frea and now his little brother. Would you mind if someone used your description since it was so well written?
Please see the PM I just sent you - if you agree, then the cast will be filled by Monday morning.
So, can you just hold those two Character slots open until then?
I don't mind, certainly- it would be shame to put Archim to waste, I spent more time than in alot of RPGs on that profile and first post. As I can't use them, I would be flattered if someone else would.
I "spoke" with Aman. I'll pick up her character and run with it, if that is alright with you.
The other player I mentioned in my PM will post for Fréa if that is ok with you.
Sounds good to me.
Thus, the remaining available spot if someone else wants to play is the additional Rohirrim that Snowdog was going to play.
Character Description Form:
Have you ever played in an RPG at the Barrow Downs? – YES - Which one? Fall of Greenwood the Great, cameo in Dark Seduction
How many RPG’s on the Barrow Downs are you currently involved in?
Fall of Greenwood the Great
Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES – Which one? both
For your character please include:
NAME: Hama (named for the doorkeeper who was a cousin of his mother's)
AGE: 23
RACE: Rohirrim
GENDER: male
WEAPONS: a sword, a shield, and a pair of longknives that can be used in either hand-to-hand combat or thrown
APPEARANCE: Fairly tall, with sandy brown hair, about 180 pounds, somewhat fine-featured
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: He hasn't been in the guard for very long so he is a little nervous. He feels that he has to prove himself to the other Riders of the Mark. His skills seem to him to be only mediocre, esp. when compared to the heroes of Helm's Deep and those who followed Theoden to Gondor. He has a fairly bad temper, and is apt to fly off the handle when anyone but himself slights his abilities. He is very patriotic and has a very strict honor code, even a little stricter maybe than others.
HISTORY: Hama was too young at Helm's Deep to be one of the young men who were given arms even though they didn't have much training. His brother was, however, and died in that battle. Hama feels that if he'd been given a sword, his brother wouldn't have died. That's why he joined the Riders of the Mark; he wanted to protect Rohan from having that ever happen again. He began learning from the veterans of the WotR almost as soon as they returned from it and has studied the necessary skills nonstop since.
I hope it's okay that I wrote my own character bio. I can't write from someone else's character usually, and I got a vastly different picture in my head from Snowdog's anyway.
I'm a little confused, do I need to write a first post, as my character won't appear until the Forgoil brothers set out?
Hey, Himaran. Remember me from Erebor? Here's my proposed profile and first post for the murderer. Are they alright?
BTW, anyone know how they execute people in Rohan? If the scaffolding's no good, let me know what you prefer.
I've given Fréa an extra motive for pinning things on Heldór that has to do with his ambitions. Hope this is OK.
Dain
Character Description Form:
Have you ever played in an RPG at the Barrow Downs? – YES - Which one? Road to Erebor
How many RPG’s on the Barrow Downs are you currently involved in? none
Please note you may play in only 3 games at one time.
Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES – Which one? Green Dragon
For your character please include:
NAME: Fréa Forgoil, the murderer
AGE: 35
GENDER: Male
RACE: Man, Rohirrim
WEAPONS:
He routinely carries a misericord, a narrow dagger used to deliver instantaneous death to an opponent already felled on the field of battle. On his right hip he bears a sidearm, a short utilitarian sword employed as a back-up when he finds himself in a jam. His chief weapon, however, is a heavy two-handed broadsword, a blade of considerable workmanship passed down in the Forgoil family from one generation to the next. Since his older brother Graitwa ran off when still young and only reappeared in the family sporadically, Fréa was regarded as the favored son, inheriting the fine sword once belonging to his ancestors. This mark of distinction, as well as the favoritism that underlies it, remains a constant source of friction between Fréa and his elder brother.
APPEARANCE:
Fréa is the most naturally distinguished of the siblings. Tall and muscular, he has reddish-brown hair that he wears pulled back and tied with a leather thong. His moustaches are long and wavy, his beard trimmed short and neat. Fréa takes great pains with his attire and appearance to impress those about him, especially his peers and superiors in the guards. His features are attractive in a rugged, masculine fashion. He has had more than his fair share of female admirers, young ladies of Gondor and Rohan won over by his handsome features and superficially winning ways who would willingly have importuned their families to set up a match. However, he has chosen to keep himself free until now, since he does not want anything to come between him and his chosen goal of attaining a position of authority within the King’s guards. Only when he has achieved this, will he pick a bride of suitable lineage and wealth who will carry him one step higher on the social ladder he hopes to climb.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES:
Much of the time, Fréa is careful to hide his ambition and short temper to anyone outside his family. However, he occasionally loses control and the results can be devastating. This is particularly true after he’s downed one too many drinks. He is not instinctively cruel, but can be so when it serves his purpose.
He does have a number of good traits. He is physically brave and adept with the sword. Unlike most of those he serves with, he fights with his head as well as his strong arm. He has an eye for tactics and understands the kind of influences and situations that motivate men. Unfortunately, he’s very cognizant of the fact that he has superior intelligence and tends to look down his nose at those whom he considers less generously endowed.
Despite his constant quarrels with his brothers, he has genuine affection for them, and sees himself as their protector. This is particularly true of his younger brother Archim. In some ways, it is his affection for his brothers which is the one thing protecting him against the corrupting influence of his overweening ambition. If he ever loses that sense of family loyalty, he will truly have lost the last remnant of his humanity and turned himself over to the service of the shadow.
HISTORY:
As has already been indicated, Fréa is not innately evil. But, over the years, his worldly ambitions have grown. He is frustrated that he is already thirty-five, yet is still struggling to rise above the rank of the common soldier. He is consumed by the desire to distinguish himself in the eyes of the world, to gain a position where he can control others and show that his brains and talents are superior to theirs. Passed over for promotion several times because of his explosive temper, he now resolves to let no one come between him and his intended goal.
Although he has kept it secret from his brothers, his choice of Haldor as a victim was not accidental or mere chance anger about gambling debts. Earlier that day, he had caught a glimpse of a list of recommended promotions for positions of command. At the top of the list stood Haldór’s name; his own appeared on the next line down in case Haldór should decline. While his slaying of Folca was not premeditated, his subsequent resolve to use the situation to his own advantage was more than coincidental. His fondest hope is that his rival Haldór will meet his death at the hands of the King’s authorities, but he will clearly step in to slay the man if he feels that his own self interest demands it.
FIRST POST:
Fréa stepped quietly into the cell and closed the door behind him. It was late in the evening; all the others on duty had already left except for old Balthor who was guarding the outside doors to the prison. Fréa could do or say anything he pleased to Haldór and there was no one to witness his actions or object.
Earlier that evening, he had seen Brytta stride into the cell block and talk privately with the prisoner. The two men had put their heads together in a conspiratorial fashion so that it was impossible for Fréa to hear what they were saying no matter how hard he strained. When he saw Brytta leaving the holding area, he’d gone up to the man and told him with a straight face and feigned sympathy in his voice that there was little help for his brother, and it was best if the family reconciled themselves to that reality and prepared for the worst. Brytta had not responded verbally, but had shot a vicious glance towards Fréa and clenched his fists quietly by his side.
As Fréa stepped inside carrying a torch to light the darkened cell, he glanced over towards the prisoner. “Not much longer,” he gazed steadily at Haldór. “I’ve been at these executions before. Usually, they come in the morning just before dawn to lead you out to execution. They place shackles on your legs, bind your arms, and blindfold you. Then, as you’re led down to the place where the scaffolding’s set up, the crowd will jeer and let you know how they feel about someone who murders an officer of the king. Such a pity you lost your temper and bludgeoned that poor man.”
Fréa acted as if he was about to turn aside and leave, then pivoted around at the last minute and spoke. His words did not hold a grain of truth, but then the prisoner had no way to know that. “By the way, there was something I needed to make sure and tell you. Oh, yes, I was with the commander today, and he mentioned that your brother Brytta was suspected of helping you hide the body. You know, the one who’s crippled. Someone denounced him, I believe. They’ll be charges prepared against him as well. Such a pity to see an entire family struck down. But then I guess you won’t need to worry about that since you won’t be here to visit him in prison.”
Fréa walked over to the shoddy, beaten mattress where Haldór was to sleep; the knight had taken off the chain he always wore round his neck and set it down nearby on the floor. The piece was a heavy silver chain of ornate workmanship with the insignia of the Hildeson family outlined on a golden crest. Woven in and about the frame of the crest were strands of silver hair, obviously from an older woman. Fréa reached down and fingered the piece of jewelry roughly, then picked it up and spoke with contempt, “What’s this? A family heirloom? And with your deceased mother’s lock of hair interwoven? Old Hilde of the famous Hildeson’s, the one who lost her life as Orcbait.”
Fréa lifted up the necklace and pulled out the misericord at his side, using its tip to strip out the strands of silver hair one-by-one. Then he held up the treasured locks near the flickering flame and watched as the fire totally consumed them. He halted for a moment to look over at Haldór and then pushed the jewelry deep inside his pocket. “We’ve got rules here. Prisoners aren’t allowed such trifles. This is mine by right. I don’t expect that you or your brother will need this back. See you in the morning.” Then he turned and left the cell.
