Gandalf sings this out loud to himself when he and Pippin are on the way to Minas Tirith.

Quote:
Sing all ye joyful, now sing all together!
The wind's in the tree-top, the wind's in the heather;
The stars are in blossom, the moon is in flower,
And bright are the windows of Night in her tower.

Dance all ye joyful, now dance all together!
Soft is the grass, and let foot be like feather!
The river is silver, the shadows are fleeting;
Merry is May-time, and merry our meeting.
Sing we now softly, and dreams let us weave him!
Wind him is slumber and there let us leave him!
The wanderer sleepeth. Now soft be his pillow!
Lullaby! Lullaby! Alder and Willow!
Sigh no more Pine, till the wind of the morn!
Fall Moon! Dark be the land!
Hush! Hush! Oak, Ash and Thorn!
Hushed be all water, till dawn is at hand!
It is sung in Rivendell in the "Hobbit" The chapter The Last Stage.

I beleive the rules are to give a person a week to proceed and then it's up for grabs. And since it has been, definitely go on.

When dawn came dim the land was lost,
The mountains sinking grey
Beyond the heaving waves that tossed
Their plumes of blinding spray

This is not exactly a quote of someone singing, but it fits:

The world was fair, the mountains tall
In Eldar Days begore the fall

And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin's Day.

It sounds so familier to me. I don't think it is in the lotr, because I have checked all of the poems and songs(I have them all marked). But I have only read a little in the Silmarillion and Unfinished tales. Hmmmm . . . I will just have to find it.

It IS in LotR. The ground is singing/saying it about the elves that once lived there. Legolas heard it and told Aragorn and Gimli. That's all I remember off the top of my head.

You are quite right, hobbitlass. It is the ground/rocks of Hollin. Legolas is the one who sings it. Please, carry on.

It's been really long since anyone posted here, so I guess I will try to start it back up with a new song, These are all from the same song, but they might not be anywhere near each other,

Quote:
'...loud it cried,'
'...mantle white...'
'...come no word,'
'When golden...'

1420!

Narduewen, yours is from The Song of Nimrodel which Legolas sang in FotR.

Hobbitlass, yours was so hard! The dwarves sang it in The Hobbit (Chapter XV) about Thorin. Here is the whole verse of that song:

Now call we over mountains cold,
"Come back unto the caverns old!"
Here at the Gates the king awaits,
His hands are rich with gems and gold.

I can't resist answering that one - it's one of my favourites...
It's part of Sam's song in the tower of Cirith Ungol
Quote:
In western lands beneath the sun
The flowers may rise in spring
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.
