Someone at another Tolkien site asked me to help write some Tolkien fan fiction. He was quite persistent, so I finally gave it a go. The thing was, he not only wanted me to write some fan fiction, but he wanted me to come up with a character (and a name) that could be used for a continuously expanding story. I don't know why the requester had such confidence in me, but I decided to give it a whirl.

I wrote a small introductory story, setting things up for new authors to expand upon. But a week later no one has even seen what I wrote. The site it is on is still in the process of generating some traffic, but the process may be a long one at this rate.

So, having gone to the effort of writing it, I want someone to actually see it and, if anyone is interested, help to continue the story.

Based on your comments I may (1) Post it at The Barrow-Downs site and continue it with installments I and others write; or (2) let it languish where it is; or (3) if your comments are really bad, trash it and go back to my normal method - pure plagerism.

So....the next post will show what I wrote. Comments and critques very welcome. Sock it to me!

Re: Fan Fiction

“Ah dad, you’ve told me that one before,” said the young hobbit smiling up from where he sat on the floor before his father. “Everyone knows about the Bullroarer. Don’t you know any other stories? ”

The older hobbit stood from his chair, looking down at his son.

“You should be proud of what old Bandobras did for the Shire, Faramir. After all, he was your great, great....well ... he was a great ancestor of ours.”

He crossed the room to a tall bookshelf filled with many dusty, leatherbound volumes. Most of them were labeled with a large ‘T’ indicating they contained the genealogical histories of the Took clan. Pippin reached up to the highest shelf and pulled down a small, brown book. It, too, was marked with ‘T’, but it was also bound with a delicate silken ribbon.

“This is one I don’t think I’ve read to you before, Faramir.”, he said, returning to his seat and untying the ribbon. “It was given to me by Frodo Baggins just before he...left. His mother wrote most of it before Frodo was born.”

Faramir moved closer to his father to get a better look.

“Is it about old ‘Broadbelt’ Brandybuck and the secret tunnels of Buckland?”

Pippin laughed. “No, it’s not about old Gorbadoc. It is about one the many brothers of his wife, Mirabella Took. She related this story to her daughter and had her write it down so it would not be forgotten, and Miss Primula recorded what she told her in the pages of this very book.

“Have you ever heard of Isengar the Mariner?”

Faramir’s eyes grew wide, “Isengar the Mariner! The seafaring hobbit!?”

Pippin grinned at the excitment he now saw in his son’s eyes.

“Yes. This is the story of Isengar Took who became a mariner in his youth and sailed the Great Sea beyond the Havens. Would you like to hear of his adventures?”

“Yes!”

Re: Fan Fiction

excellent begining,
a wee bit o' criteekin since you asked;
would not pippin actually have known and said that the bullroarer was his gr.gr.gr.gr.grand uncle[I think I got it right] given there famous love of genealogies ?
but that little bit aside - the possibilityof actually having a description of the white towers, the grey havens,Lindon,or the lower course of the brandywine [if he had just taken a boat out of the shire] where he might meet the remants of the secretive primitive fisher-folk[mentioned in U.T.] trapped[ as they felt] between the westernmost druedain in the south and the sindarin elves of harlindon.
not to mention a possible journey up the greyflood to the not yet entirely deserted tharbad...oh the possibilities...please, tell on!

I considered saying all the 'greats', but figured that Pippin, already a bit exasperated with Faramir's lust for new information, was just too tired to say them all

Thanks lindil and everybody. I think I just may continue this story .... lindil has given me a great idea for a first chapter.

I suppose I could help too... I've been writing a fanfic about the Blue Wizards and their fate. Won't be too long though, but I suppose I could just write about all 5 Istari. If you need my help, suggestions, etc. e-mail me at magus1386@hotmail.com.

Fan Fiction Section is Open

For all of you who might like to read or write fan fiction, the Fan Fiction section of The Barrow-Downs is now open!

I started it with and Introduction and Chapter 1 - Part I of the Isengar the Mariner story (Introdcution is the same as posted above - Chapter 1 - Part I is new).

One other author has already submitted a partial story which will be done soon and posted. It, too, will be a continuing saga.

Gandalf12, you should write those Blue Wiard stories and submit them to fanfic@barrowdowns.com

Thanks everyone,

Re: Fan Fiction

chief-I am looking forward to see how your future mariner will overcome ferry-sckness!
I read a bit of the opening and poem #2 to The adventures of Tom Bombadil today and there was a good deal of hobbit/boat/river lore that may or maynot be of use to your isengar.

Re: Fan Fiction

Thanks, lindil. I've never read the Adventures of TB but now I will. I was going to just make up the river boating and such, but I was also hoping to stick to the actual books as closely as possible. I wonder if I can find a copy of that book anywhere.....

Re: Fan Fiction

Ron, it's quite short, @50-60 pp. Why don't I scan you the pages that l. mentioned and attach them to an e-mail. And if you like I could snail-mail a photo-copy of the rest. I have no idea if it is hard to find nowadays, but the copies might hold you until you can locate something nicer.

That would be great, g. I went by BN today but they didn't have it and I didn't feel like standing in line to order it. Hook me up with the appropriate pages, please. Isengar has got to get back on the river soon enough if he plans on getting anywhere

Re: Fan Fiction

Ron,
I've scanned you several pages of AoTB and currently they're sitting in Adobe Photoshop format. Before I export to you, why don't you tell me what format you can best cope with. I thought I might save them in a Power-Point presentation. But I've never actually sent a bunch of images before so I'm not sure if that's easiest thing for us both. (So anyhow, what's preferable, JPEGs, GIFs, EPSs, presumably not PICTs).
Let me know.

Re: Fan Fiction

I was reading the hobbit to my biggest girl helen [ age4] and in the first chapter I noticed a curious reference which if you don't already have it in mind may be of some use to you. It is a bit about Gandalf having been responsible for so many hobbit lads and lassies running off and sailing [?] I am off to check the next addition.
