Ursula LeGuin is a well-known fantasy author, Holbytlass. Her best-known fantasy books, the "Earthsea" series, are well worth reading!

It's alright. We at least still have the right of eating lefsa... It's even more hilarious when you contend with Norwegians, Monegasques and Slavs arguing about the family's 'yeah, at least my side wasn't a bunch of horse thieves!' perdicament. They just end up sharing a bottle in the end anyway... I do enjoy Formendacil's signature: Quote:

On the subject of pirates and imagination it was made far too easy for us at my infant school because we had an actual boat in the playground! We played on it for ages and had the best games going on, and then the health and safety people came in and told us we couldn't play on it anymore because of the dangers of splinters Seriously, you can get a grazed knee but not a splinter!?!
Anyway, to put this somewhat on topic Quote:

I don't understand it fully either. It's from that beautiful yet bizarre masterpiece, the Welsh Mabinogion; from the Arthurian branch named Culhwch and Olwen. It's part of the description of Olwen, the giant Ysbaddaden's (I think) lovely daughter.
The rest goes like this: Whiter than the breast of a wild swan were her two breasts; redder than the foxglove were her cheeks. All who saw her became filled with love for her. Four white clover flowers would grow up in her footsteps whenever she went; and hence she was called Olwen... I took it from my trusty Celtic Miscellany, an anthology of Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic, Breton, Manx, Cornish and Welsh legend and poetry...not, alas, in the original languages. I know no Gaelic, but when I see it on the page my blood tingles and I look around frantically for my claymore that I might fall upon the sassenach... Er, yes. To summarise, I think rather more highly of Celtic literature than Tolkien did. It has a magic most Anglo-Saxon writers cannot near, and most Anglo-Saxon readers cannot articulate, beyond everything...

You just write your name at the top and check the box that says "I'm smart. Let me attend school for free." That's all there is to it- unless there is a "pay me to go to school" box. Check that one if it's there. Though most people don't know it, getting paid to go to school is actually much better than just going for free. It doesn't sound logical, but once you have a few advanced economics courses under your belt you will understand why.

And phantom did you have to write a personal statement? Because that's the hard part - you're not allowed to write 'take me because I'm fantastic' apparently.

Well now, I won't refer to Blanche Ingram in Jane Eyre who claimed fatuously that she doated on corsairs, but all of your comments would I'm sure please Le Guin. A little background to that quotation, which had to be cruelly truncated due to the merciless character limit on our sigs: It comes from LeGuin's 1974 essay, Why Are Americans Afraid of Dragons? And the experience she refers to of the librarian's horror over 'escapist' children's fantasy occured ten years before she wrote, so Le Guin was referring to a mindset prevalent in the US circa the mid-sixties. Her short essay is an empassioned plea for the value of fantasy which, she claims, the Captains of Industry and Multinational Corporations denigrate and deny. "Imagination will out," she says, and if it isn't recognised properly it will grow into something deformed. But her paen to childhood is good enough for me to quote here at length. Quote:
Le Guin, by the by, is definitely a writer of Speculative Fiction who must be read by those who want to know about the early days of SF. Also by those who just plain enjoy reading good fantasy! Personally, I don't like all her work--some of it gets too dogmatic for me--but as Esty says, the Earthsea works are marvellous reads. And for those who are interested in Tolkien's influence , why, she is the most rewarding place to begin such forensic study!

As it happens, until last June, I was a Page (bookshelver) in the local library, and we had (at one point, anyway) three copies of The Hobbit. One was in the Juvenile Fiction. One was in the Youth Fiction. One was in the Adult Fiction... I believe though, that as we thinned out the older copies, we ended up with two: one in the Juvenile Fiction (the "Kids" chapterbooks), and a Graphic Novel version in the Youth Fiction (the "Teenager" section). T'was most vexing and amusing.
