Ring East Coast BD

Beren87 and I were talking earlier and the subject of the Seattle meeting came up. I think that it would be a good idea for us on the East Coast to make an effort to do the same sort of thing sometime.

Any suggestions for a place? Pittsburgh was suggested - any others?

Is there anyone else interested?

That would be a wondeful idea! Even though I'm from California, I still think they should have one up in the East Coast. Pittsburgh would be a good idea to have it.

Yes yes, I think everyone here should meet.

I would most certainly attempt to come, but it would rest on my ability to drive to Pittsburgh (only 3 hours from where I live).

I could try to come. I think Pittsburgh is about an hour or so away from where I live.

Of course, whether I come or not all depends on what my Mom says about the matter, so . . . I dunno. I don't find it very likely that I will . . . But I'm still putting in my vote for this happening!!

Philadelphia's better than Pittsburgh. More art, less steel. Pbrgh does have an Andy Warhol museum though...

Uh, I have a better idea. How about Durham, NC? What's not to love? You have a bus stop, a bar with underage drinking, and a crack house...

Ok, seriously, I'd be willing to drag my little butt to Pittsburgh or Philly, unless anyone has a better idea.

I'm in Richmond, VA, so I might be able to make it to an east coast BD gathering.

An east coast gathering sounds great! Philly sounds good, I don't know how I'd get there though. I'd have to ask my mom and see if she freaks out or lets me go. I live in MD so an east coast get-together sounds cool.

Ah, I prefered Pittsburgh, but its for the good of the whole I suppose.

The Warhol museum is quite nice, Rimbaud. For a Tolkien-esqe gathering however, Philadelphia would probably be better. It has more of the "old world" charm I think.

It was only a suggestion, I didn't mean to hijack proceedings.

I have heard that of the Warhol, Beren, I had the opportunity to go earlier this year, and did not. A pity.

Oh, that it is. I was there for an entire 10 minutes before it closed.

I don't mind where we meet, Philadelphia or Pittsburgh.

I could probably come if I have a car by whenever this will be.
I live in the Midwest, so it's more likely for me to go East than West (less distance)... besides, I haven't heard of many other BDers being from the Midwest.

*coughNewYorkcough* For those of us that cannot drive because they are only fifteen (although I'm getting my Learner's in under five months), anywhere other than their home town is quite inconvenient.

Anyway: we all know New York has the best museums anyway. In any case: you could check out Broadway plays and the like. And the FRICK is the best art museum ever, in my opinion. It used to be a house, and the collection is the former owner's private collection.

I see a lot more chance in me being able to go to New York than in me going to Pittsburg. And maybe I can drag my other LOTR-crazed friend along! He's not on the Barrowdowns, though. I should try to convince him to join.

How about Baltimore? There's a lot of things to do there, and it is about the middle of the east cost...almost . If you guys want a more historical activity there are lots of cool things to do in Annapolis too.

Just a suggestion!

Heh.
I must say I am pleasantly surprised by the reaction to this thread.

The other question besides 'Where?' then would be 'When?' Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? If we plan far enough in advance, then more of us would be able to show up.

Wow, a B-D gathering where I could meet some of the best and brightest of the Downs, including the Grand Poohbah B-W himself? It's like a dream come true!

Well, no, not really. A dream come true would be...uh, never mind. But it does sound like a lot of fun! P-Burg, Philly, or New York all sound fine to me. I'm foot-loose and fancy free, so whatever weekend you all choose is good.

I've attended a couple of other web-based gatherings and had a ball, so I would be very much into meeting you all down whatever dark alley you choose.

Oh, and Lush, I can drink you under the table!

Tigerlily - I'm in the Midwest, too. I'm in Ohio. It's to the right of you as you're facing Canada.

Pittsburgh would be excellent, there is the Cathedral of Learning and the Carnegie Museum. They are right across the street from one another, plus there are several other things to do in the area because all the colleges are right there.

Personally, I would love to for Pittsburgh to be the meeting place.

My vote is for Philadelphia. When, as long as the "when" is not mid-week, is not an issue for me so much. Anywhere much more north of Philly would most likely be out of the question for me.

Besides, as far as museums go, Rodin kicks Warhol's butt deep into the ground any day of the year.

As for when, it simply must be in the summer. Preferrably after June (for me) or in other words Malaria season...

I would suggest only a one to three day affair however, with dinner and such.

Tigerlily, does Texas count as the Midwest? Probably not, it doesn't really fit in with anything...

That said, I may actually be (more or less) on the East Coast about the time of this proposed gathering. The only sure thing I know is that I'll camping in Gettysburg over the Fourth of July weekend. Who knows, it may happen...

This has appeal. How are we going to connect faces to real names to nicks??? My associative powers are far too limited and my associative memory takes up about half a KB-- it's one of the reasons I'm an introvert.

So... I'll be the one hiding in the corner.

Greetings all!
I have been thinking all day about a Barrowmoot.
Let me field some questions.
If we met in the warm weather {after school is out} would more B-D`s be able to attend?
What about a moot in conjunction with a renaissance faire? We have King Richards Faire in my neck of the woods. Costumes etc. Camping and motels are local. Went on line and noticed fairs in the areas under consideration. Comments? Any local knowledge we could tap?
I also looked for a Tolkien convention, no luck, any body know of one we might consider?

Question: Where are you located, alquadae?

After reading all of this, I propose we try to find a happy-medium. How about somewhere in Connecticut or New Jersey?

And I propose, when we have this little to-do, we wear nametags. Make them yourself out of whatever, decorate them, and make them yours.

And as long as it isn't mid-June I'll be fine. I'm going to Russia in mid-June...and August: no August for me either. I'll be in far Western New York then.

Well, let's see...I used to live in Richmond and would dearly love to re-visit. (Would be interested to know if we know any of the same haunts, BW.) I live fairly close to Phila. so that's OK too. I have family in NC so I'm pretty easy as far as location. However, I've just been told this evening that my husband has been offered a position in Louisville, KY (promotion for him but leaving a fantastic job I love for me - and PACKING - argh!) beginning in April so who knows where I'll be by the time this whole thing is settled. I won't vote - I'll just keep an eye on you guys & hopefully be able to show up when the time comes.

As I said before, I'm open as to the city, I can drive to PA, or take a flight further, and the time as well, though I do like spring more than summer.

But who's going to be in charge of this? Is this Bruce's baby? Is he the C.O.W. (Chief Organizing Wight) of this Barrowmoot?

Raefindel - You seemed to have organized these things. Any suggestions?

Once we come to a general idea of when and where (even a vague notion), I'm willing to get things going in regards to details. Organizing, or at least delegating, things is no problem.

PS - Personally, I vote for meeting this summer in Pittsburgh, it seems to be more central to most of us than any other place mentioned. I am, however, willing to go with the majority on it.

Should the Barrowmoot coincide with our usual summer trip to DC in July, I could make any of Pittsburgh (shudder), Philly, or DC's environs. I love Annapolis.

On the other hand, with the exchange rate, you could certainly get much more for your money here in Toronto. And we have not only Rodins here, but stunning Henry Moores as well. And as for Warhol, well, there is that major collection on the drive up here, in (shudder) Buffalo.
