Sting The Chapter Game

My humble apologies if this has been done before. The rules are fairly simple. You put in a paragraph and you have to guess from which chapter and book its from
First one
Quote:
Down the road from the gate they fled.In fifty places, with a swift bend round a jutting bastion of the cliff, it took them out of sight from the Tower. They had escaped for the moment.Cowering back against the rock they drew breath, and they clutched at their hearts. Pearching now on the wall beside the ruined gate the Nazgul sent out its deadly cries. All the cliffs echoed.
LOTR, The Silmarillion and The Hobbit are the books you can choose from.

It surely does. It also might prove rather easy. But for now, I shall move it to Quotable Quotes and see how it fares.

Please continue the game there.

As the game isn't actually closed, can I guess that it's from Return of the King, involving Frodo and Sam, therefore...is it Book 6, chapter 2?

I'm having a lot of lucky guesses in these games recently...OK here goes:

Quote:
There were no clouds overhead yet, but a heaviness was in the air; it was hot for the season of the year. The rising sun was hazy, and behind it, following it slowly up the sky, there was a growing darkness, as of a great storm moving out of the East. And away in the North-west there seemed to be another darkness brooding about the feet of the Misty Mountains, a shadow that crept down slowly from the Wizard's Vale.

You're half right - it is from Book Three, but it's not Chapter Five. Good try though.

Ahem! This topic should have been closed.

However, since it has gained a new lease of life, I suppose that there's no reason why it should not continue for the time being. Provided, of course, that it proves to be an interesting and challenging game ...

Well done Sleepy Ranger, it is Chapter 7.

Just as a query, what's the rule for this game on the book? Do we allow people to look stuff up or just expect them to guess?

How will we not if they've checked or not?
Besides it'll be too tough if we try and guess. Oh by the way call me Sleepy
And from now on you can also give one from the Silm or The Hobbit.
Ok the question...

Oh by the way if you want to guess you can
If I can't guess it I'll check.

Ah, he was close.

The first line of paragraph 5 in Chapter 23, "Of Tour and the Fall of Gondolin".

It reads:
Quote:
At length they came in their journeying to the Pools of Ivrin, and looked with grief on the defilement wrought there by the passage of Glaurung the Dragon; but even as they gazed upon it they saw one going northward in haste, and he was a tall Man, clad in black, and bearing a black sword. But they knew not who he was, nor anything of what had befallen in the south; and he passed them by, and they said no word.
