"Walking for pleasure? Why didn't I drive?" he thought, as he usually did at the beginning of an expedition. "And all my beautiful feather beds are sold to the Sackville Baginses! These tree roots would do them good." He stretched. "Wake up, hobbits!" he cried. "It's a beautiful morning."

Probably a question for the newcomers & novices section, but what is that word 'drive' doing there? I thought there were no cars in Middle Earth??

Correct.

The word "drive" was around before cars, and it meant travelling by means of horse and buggy (or other similar forms of transportation that did not require walking).

I never know what passage to use, but I'm hungry and it's supper-time, so I thought this would be fun.

There was ___ ____, ____ _____, a __________ ____, new ______, slabs of ______, and half a ____ ______: good _____ ____, as good as the _____ could show, and ________ enough to ______ the last of ___’_ __________ (already much _______ by the __________ of the ____).

Quote:
They were washed and in the middle of good deep muggs of beer when Mr. Butterbur and Nob came in again. In a twinkling the table was laid. There was hot soup, cold meats, a blackberry tart, new loaves, slabs of butter, and half a ripe cheese: good plain food, as good as the Shire could show, and homelike enough to dispel the last of Sam’s misgivings (already much relieved by the excellence of the beer).[
