Ring Why didn't Sauron feel the Ring?

Isn't it strange that Sauron couldnt feel that his own ring was approaching and entering his realm? It is written that the ring wanted to get back to his master and so it devoured gollum and so on ... but i think Sauron MUST have felt the ring. it was his own and it wanted to get back to him. and if the ringwraiths were drawn by the ring when they persued frodo , why couldnt its own maker feel it?

Yeah, and when the Hobbits made it to the Cracks of Doom, he became aware of them, but it was already too late.

Sauron's ability to "sense" the Ring seems very limited unless someone actually puts it on, and even then it takes him some time to home in on it. Add to that his distraction with conducting the war (he apparently had to devote a lot of his will and attention to micro-managing), his fear that someone like Gandalf or Elrond would try to use the Ring against him, and the fact that he never anticipated that the West would do something as crazy as send the Ring with only a couple of bearers into his own land, and it's easier to understand how he missed the passage of the Ring into Mordor.

He was busy when the Ring entered Mordor. By the time he realized where it was...well, he wasn't long for this world.

Well, sort of... He was cast into the Shadow. But did he go into the Nothingness as Morgoth did?

What I would like to know is why did the ring make everyone invisible except Sauron.(there is probably a rationla explanation but I'm too dumb to see it)

Might be as simple as that: the Ring could make Sauron invisible at his own will; when he wanted to intimidate his minions he would take visible shape even when wearing the Ring. Of course, this raises the question how Isildur could cut off his finger, and defeat him in first place, because surely Sauron would have wanted to be invisible in that fight. Gollum the first? I have one correction to make, not everyone except Sauron was visible with the ring. If you remember back in the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring Tom Bombadil put on the ring and was still seen, of course Tom was something of an anomaly.

Sauron didn't die when the ring was destroyed, he was reduced to a mere ghost lurking in shadows and creating mischief. As Gandalf explained at the end of the Return of the King.

Sauron could only sense the ring when its power was being used i.e. when it was worn. This was how the ringwraiths were able to strike Frodo on Weathertop when he put the ring on. As is evidenced by the reaction of his minions when Sauron realized the ring was at Mt. Doom, Sauron's attention had hitherto been bent on controlling events to the north and his thoughts were more than likely occupied with the possibilty that Aragorn (who had challenged him in the palantir) or possibly Gandalf himself who had risen from the dead and brought about the defeat of Saruman already wielded its power.

I would also venture to say that the wearer's will also had some part to play in hiding it's presence from the Dark Lord if he so desired it although this would become increasingly difficult as ring drew closer to Sauron and its will to make itself known to its master became harder to resist.

Recall that the ring was only as powerful as its bearer "giving power according to their stature" as Gandalf (approx.) put it. So too it's pull less powerful. When no one wore it (at the bottom of the Anduin), it couldn't draw Sauron. Gollum.. couldn't even get him out of the mountains. Bilbo could wear it twice a week without notice. Sam wore it right on the border of Mordor and drew less attention than Frodo on Amon Hen. That's why the plan worked. If Gandalf or Aragorn had carried it to Orodruin, they wouldn't've made it across the Anduin.

Perhaps Sauron did feel the ring enter Mordor, but due to his pride or doubt that someone could WANT to destroy such a thing, he denied it. Or it could have been due to the fact that it was all based on a test of will. Sauron's will was searching for his ring, but Frodo had all of his will bent toward the ring's destruction. And remember, Gandalf said that Hobbits were amazing creatures, and that they constantly surprised him. So perhaps Frodo's will overcame Sauron's, or "shielded" the ring from Sauron's ever-searching benevolance..

perhaps he was too busy looking for it to notice, if you know what I mean. You always find that what you are looking for tends to be right under your nose.

1420!

I would say it was the fact that both Pippin and Aragorn looked into the "seeing stones". This forced Sauron to focus his "eye" on the west. He didn't trust Saurman and felt he was being betrayed by him when he mistook Pippin as the ring bearer and then when he saw that the King of Gondor was alive and using His Stone it forced him into action in a "too hasty manner", as Treebeard would say!!

How come when Frodo put the Ring on at Amon Hen Sauron began to look for Frodo in that three seconds, but when he put it on to get to the boat, nothing is said about Sauron's eye watching? and certainly it would take a while to get back to the boat...

I think Sauron was able to find Frodo so quickly was because he was on the seat of seeing. The seat was used by (I think?) the king to look over his realm, so might have had some innate power in it that allowed Sauron to find Frodo so quickly when he wore the ring.

IIRC, Frodo was looking towards Mordor while wearing the One Ring at Amon Hen. The power of the Seeing Seat (?) together with that of the Ring brought Frodo into Sauron's vision.

Note that at Cirith Ungol, Sam says to Frodo that putting on the IRng,once they had properly entered Mordor, would be a very bad idea - in fact, when he enters Mordor, he imddeiately sneses that the likelyhood of being caught by Sauron's will is immensely increased compared to when they were in Shelob's lair in the mountains. Sauron could only sence it, he could not feel it. If you put it on, the Nazgul Feel it's power, but i don't say it saying anything about Sauron feeling the ring
