Hmmm....I'm not done w/ LOTR completely. I'm one chapter away from the end of TTT. And I know a little from the Silm. so here are my favorites so far:

Daughter: Nianna (mmm...so pretty)

Son: Haldir (although, I think I'd be kind and make it his middle name, sparing the poor boy some ridicule from his peers)

~hey, hey! first time i've been the first post on anything!

Well, I'm actually planning on having a Sam...but that's not very unusual. (And his full name will be Samuel, as I think it would be hard to convince my future husband of calling his son Samwise. Unless I get lucky and he's as obsessed as me.)

Other than that, I do like Yavanna. But I think that I'd probably form my own names from my limited stash of Elvish words. (On another forum, non-LotR, I'm Daewen, and I love the way that sounds. It means shadow-maiden.)

By the way, mae govannen, Aengthrea! Enjoy the Downs!

I'm going to have an Elanor! And I know I'll have a Meriadoc. I'll probably end up with a Peregrin, too. Definitely no Frodo, as my family's dog is called Frodo, and he's a pretty strange dog.

Let me see... I think I'd also have a Sam, and I'd try my very best to get him to be Samwise. I think I'd have an Aurien as a daughter.

I think that's about it... that's... five. I'll think about it more if I ever get more kids than that.

Good to see you around sister! And yes I do agree that Yavanna is a beautiful name. And if I were to name my girl that, then her nickname would be Vana, since it's almost in Yavanna and it's the name of another of the Valier. Hmm.. I'll think of some other names which are Tolkien related, but I must be off for now.

I'd love to call my children something along the lines of "Beren" (Ben for short) and "Morwen". I don't know why, I just love the name "Morwen"....

I would love to have multitudes of children and name them every name out of the trilogy that I like. (Which means I'd have to have at least 50 children. Ugh.)

But I'll probably end up with a stubborn husband who wants to name our kids the usual "Sally" or "Bob". *scowls*

So I'll just have to have multitudes of dogs and cats to name as I want!

Thumbs up

I think Sam and Elanor are great names! Either those, or I've been thinking lately that Anna would be a good one, as it means 'gift', and also is a normal muggle name. But then that would be weird, as I'm called Anastasia and all my friends call me Ana... Hmm... I'll shut up now. Elanor is the best one I think.

I'm not sure about first names, but for a second name for a girl: Arwen, Morwen, Elanor, Eowyn, Yavanna. For a boy, Aragorn, Frodo, Pippin, Faramir, Mithrandir (Randy for short?).

I don't know if I would name my children with first names of Tolkienian names...I don't know: I go through phases.

There was a phase when I wanted to name them after Greek heroes/heroines. Now I like the names of gemstones, based on the child's eyecolor when he/she is born.

I now will not, however, give my children Jewish or Christian names, as I am neither...nor any major religious name, for that matter. LOL...but I will do Greek mythology: interesting...

And I might to Tolkien names such Mereniel or something pretty like that...using Elvish but not actually from the books, maybe...although Galadriel is very pretty, I think.

I will never give my kids 'normal' names but neither would they be just from LotR.
Here are some examples:
Raeneigh (Pronounced rA-nEE)
Rian (REE-un)
Marsyas (Mar-sigh-us)
Cestri (Says-tree)
Alin
Elelisse (I think this translates to "elf candy")

These are just a few but I have lists everywhere. I find these in nature books, field guides, regular books, and I make them up. It's a fun and unusual hobby.

Elvish name link:
http://www.elvish.org/elm/names.html

And I absolutely love the name Elanor. Other names for girls: Luthien, Arwen, Lalaith, Lorien. Only middle names, though. I hold with the reasons expressed further up in the thread. All of these go great with Ava, except Lorien: that's better with "Lorien Elanor."

Boys: eeeh, hold with the biblical names. (I am Christian, BTW, so no problems there, though I've known plenty of agnostics who were named James). Beren Elijah I like.

Personally, I think "Samwise" could be gotten away with. It's not that odd. Try naming a little one "Meriadoc" or "Frodo" however, and you could have a bit of a problem...

When I get my first dog for myself, I am goint to name it Frodo. I could not see naming your child that name, but a pet is fine. I also would love to give a child a name from the stories, but they are all kind of strange (not to us, but everyone else), so I guess they would have to be middle names.

You know, I'm so weird in real life that I'll need a very weird husband...very attractive, but very weird nonetheless. Knowing me, I'll probably end up marrying an attractive, poor actor...so, as he will be weird, he will like the weird names I'll give my kids.

Tolkien

There's been a few names for girls I've fallen in love with. The first was Luthien just cause it's pretty and she was so awesome in the story. I also really like Lalaith. It means laughter. Meanings of names are important to me. And my third is Lorellin. It's the name of the Golden Tree in the Silmarillion.

I have two other names for girls, not from Tolkien, that I really like: Lucy, from the Chronicles of Narnia, and Davan, an Irish name that means "beloved."

I like Sam for boys, but I think Patrick, another non-Tolkien name, would be my first choice.

For a guy, Meriadoc, Aragorn maybe, or perhaps Haldir.

I'd love to name a boy Peregrin, but seeing as Pippen would be too obvious, maybe Perry for short?
there might be some hurt kids on the playground in 10 years...
hmmm,Frodo's a nice name, but maybe you should call them...Dobby for short?no,don't name anyone Frodo unless you want them to be tough(in a boy named Sue way)

For a girl I like the name Gilraen. It isn't too strange, and it might just work for a first name. But this Tolkien-Naming idea isn't totally new! Once, I was watching an old game-show rerun from a few years back, and one of the contestants was named Galadriel. I'm not even kidding!

For a boy, I like Peregrin. Only if someone nick-named him 'Perry', I would probably die.

If my future husband doesn't like those names, well he's gonna have to put up with 'Teagan' and 'Mercedes' (No, not the car!)

There's going to be an awful lot of confusion in the classroom in fifteen or so years.

Hey, I know a kid called Mercedes. Twins- Mercedes and Porsche. Yes, I really am serious.

What if you named your child after a place in Middle Earth? Ithilien is nice, but somehow I can't see a mother standing on her doorstep and calling, "Mordor! Come in for your tea, Mordor!"

I would call my kid Rohan. Ithilien is nice, and so is Rhovanion.

Rohan sounds like Ronan, and I will always assosiate that with Ronan Keating *shudder*.

Alot of the names sound welsh or irish, which is nice. Eowyn, for example.

Have any of you read "The Great Gilly Hopkins"? It's about this a very troublesome little girl but the cool thing about her is that "Gilly" is short for Galadriel. I think that thats a good way to name your kid Galadriel and get away with it. I wish I could remember who the author is.

Aaaanyway, talking about embarassing your kids later in life how about "Fatty Bolger" (excuse typos im short a copy of FOTR )

***Random Tolkien Fact***
Did you know the girl who designed the Vietnam memorial read Tolkien?

Fatty Bolger? That rings a bell, yet I have no idea where from.

We had to read the Great Gilly Hopkins in First year. Can't say it was one of my favourite books, leastaways not at the beginning, but that was incredibly cool the way she was called Galadriel. When my English teacher, also a Tolkien-fan asked who Galadriel was, I was shocked that I was the only one who knew!

My fear is that I will meet that English teacher on this forum. *shudder* The stuff of nightmares. Although if she read RPGs, it could increase my essay mark...
