The book quote is in my sig, its the same as the movie plus "you cannot pass".
He saying (i think) that he it a maia, he weilds the power of the sun (possibly simply meaning hes a goodguy) and that the dark fire (just evil fire) will not help the barlog (or flame of Udun, the place the barlog is from).
I think. Seeing as it is my name i should know, but am not sure.

"I am a servant of the secret fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. Go back to the shadow. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udûn! You shall not pass!"
For one, Gandalf wears Narya, the great red ring given to him by Cirdan. That may be what he means by the "Flame of Anor" and less likely the secret fire. "Flame of Udun" is of course the balrog itself.

quote:
where is udun? isnt it near the black gate of mordor?

*Ahem*... Udûn is that lovely place we mortals call Hell... I believe it was another name for Angband, the stronghold of Morgoth during the First Age. That is where the Balrogs were bred.

You know, I'd never thought of flame of Anor in relation to Narya. How clever.

Its probably not related to Nayna. First, why would Gandalf reveal this to his enemy?
(EDIT oops read the previous wrong, ill leave this hear anyway)
Second, "The secret fire" is spoken of as the flame of the world, or the earth. Gandalf is saying with that part that he is a servent of the world or Lluvier (spelling?)
[ January 30, 2003: Message edited by: The Flame Of Anor ]

quote:
I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor

I have always thought that this was a reference to Narya. Gandalf did not wear Narya openly, hence the reference to it being the "Secret Fire".
And why not tell the Balrog? After all, he was about to kill him.
