Question Rings Quiz or IQ test?

In my psychology class I had the misfortune of taking an IQ test. You will see what this has to do with LOTR in a moment. There was 60 questions and most were pretty boring, like what shape relates to the other shapes, but four questions stood out. These are rather amusing. Mind that these questions are from an actual IQ test.

1) If some Smaugs are Thors and some Thors are Thrains, the some Smaugs are definitely Thrains.

Is this: True False Neither

This was the first one I encountered and I only thought I was a coincedence but I don't think they are related for they are always trying to kill eachother.

2) If some Bifurs are Bofurs and all Gloins are Bofurs, then some Bifurs are definitely Gloins.

Is this: True False Neither

Well I know they are drawves but that is all I can tell you.

3) If all wargs are twerps and no twerps are Gollums, then no Gollums are definitely wargs.

Is this: True False Neither

Well Gollum is a lot of things but not a warg and the twerps...well they will have to be more specific.

And finally the Granddaddy of them all!!!

4) A Spaceship recieved three messages in a strange language from a distant planet. The astronauts studied these messages and found out that "Elros Aldarion Elendil" means "Danger Rocket Explosion" and "Edain Minyatur Elros" means "Danger Spaceship Fire" and "Aldarion Gimilzor Gondor" means "Bad Gas Explosion."

What does Elendil mean? Danger Explosion Nothing Rocket Gas

Well first of all Elendil is a King but since IQ tests get very literal his name means "Elf Friend" or "Star Lover". You can take your pick.

And the rest of the translations...

Elros Aldarion Elendil: Star Foam son of trees Elf Friend (Wow that makes sense!)

Edain Minyatur Elros: Men first master of Elros ( Isn't supposed to be the other way around. )

Aldarion Gimlizor Gondor: Son of trees Gimilzor Land of Stone (This may explain Gimli's feelings toward trees and stone work.)

Well not only do we have bad translators but we have a planet of Elves who can't talk correctly.

Well I don't know if this way an IQ test of a Rings Triva game, you be the judge. If anyone has seen similar things feel free to share.

Wow. Those were really asked in an IQ test? Unbelievable...

By the way, Elendil in the question means Rocket.

Yes, these questions are from a real IQ test.
I came across it, and completed it, on an Internet site. (http://web.tickle.com/tests/uiq/)

It can't be a very reliable test: it said I was very inteligent.

Yes, but they are just labels. Which could have easily been x,y and z or tanterly, wespkin and venkma. Curious that they chose these labels, but not especially.

Boots Heh.....

I've seen things like that. My mom has a really old physcology book that contains some odd puzzle things. One of them follows the classic fox/hen/grain model, except for the fact that in this puzzle it's orcs and hobbits that must be got safely across a river!

This IQ test told me I was superior which is the level bellow the highest level gifted. I must be pretty smart then.

Gosh, I'm glad I didn't have to take that

It's really cool that it features Tolkien, but if I came upon those I would completely freak out. I have taken IQ test's but nothing like that.

I remember this one from an IQ test I took. Funny cause I never thought about the obvious significance of those names. I suppose that makes me stupid.
As for the last one - well, I bet that's really confusing and frustrating for those who know real Elvish!

Indeed.

Silmaril Poor Tolkien readers...

Somehow it just came into my mind that if everyone around the world will be required to take such IQ tests, we Tolkien readersv would get low scores because we would think of how the words relate to the books rather than looking for the logic behind the questions!

Don't you think so?

IQ and other such tests use 'meaningful' labels to represent objects or parameters for just this reason, to penalise people for introducing information outside the scope of the problem. Whoever does this deserves whatever low score they get.
