I thought the part where Sam gets to the Cotton's place and Rosie says "You didn't hurry, did you?" Those Hobbits, they crack me up.

Re: When did you laugh?

My favorite funny happens when Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, & Co. arrive at Isengard and find Pippin and Merry lounging after a picnic. Merry (or Pippin?) gets up, nonchalantly walks past the other members of the Fellowship, and welcomes the King of Rohan. Hehehe...then Gimli throws a fit.

I love the part when Sam calls Gollum a sneak.

Quote:
S- Where have you been to-sneaking off and sneaking back, you old villian?

G- Sneaking? Sneaking? Hobbits always so polite, yes. O nice hobbits! Smeagol brings them up secret ways that nobody else could find. Tired he is, thirsty he is, yes, thirsty; and they say sneak, sneak. Very nice friends, O yes, my precious, very nice.

S- I'm Sorry, but you startled me out of my sleep. And I shouldn't have been sleeping, and that made me a bit sharp. But where have you been to?

G- Sneaking, said Gollum.

S- I think we shall get tired of that word soon!

Frodo- Hullo Smeagol, found any food, have you had any rest?

G- No food, no rest, nothing for Smeagol. He's a Sneak!

That's one of my favorites, and I also like it when Gandalf asks Pippin what he'd like to know.

Re: When did you laugh?

A bit late getting to this one, but here goes...

When the Fellowship reached Lorien and encountered the elves in the trees, Legolas and the elves spoke to each other in Elvish. Sam said, "They're elves! I wonder what they're saying." To which Legolas replied, "Yes, they're elves, and they say that you breathe so loud that they could shoot you in the dark."

Also...Gollum (to Frodo): "Where's the other one? The cross, rude hobbit?"

And, finally, Sam (about the "neekerbreekers&quot: "What do they live on when they can't get hobbit?"

In the Hobbit when they meet the trolls. Bilbo goes burglering, and one of the trolls catches him and asks what he was. Bilbo answered "Bilbo Baggins, a bur--a hobbit" and poor William asks "Whats a burrahobbit got to do with my pocket, anyways? (by the way, great name, burrahobbit! )

Hm, I was reading through these posts and it seems to be me that always gets laughed at!

Ah, a hobbit can afford to laugh at himself I suppose...

All of the latter posts tickle me, but a favourite of mine has to be in Three is Company, where Frodo goes for a walk, returns and Pippin asks him where the water is, and Frodo replies "I don't keep water in my pockets."

Also the song at the Prancing Pony, the Merry Old Inn is funny too [/IMG]

Gandalf when Pippin tossed that rock in Moria...
"This is not a walking party! Toss yourself in next time and save us further nuisance!"

I don't feel sorry for Pippin though. He could dish it out, too. (The first morning camping out in the Shire, to a sleepy Sam)
"Sam, it's half past nine! Have you got the bathwater hot?"
"No sir, no I haven't!"

Pippin to Frodo: "But I was hoping to stop at the Green Dragon. They have the best beer in Bywater by all accounts!"

"Well that settles it! Short cuts make long delays but inns make longer ones!"

So they agreed, but Sam not without a wistful regret for the best beer in Bywater.
- something like that.

Oh, and Aragorn to Merry in the houses of the healing:
"If you think I've gone through battle and fire and the paths of the dead to bring one soldier his pack that he carelessly dropped in the middle of a battle, you are mistaken. Send for the herbmaster..."

After Aragorn leaves Pippin informs Merry, "My dear fool, your pack is right there. He saw it the whole time of course."

I like this bit after they restore Bagshot Row.

Quote:
There was some discussion of the name that the new row should be given. Battle Gardens was thought of, or Better Smials. But after a while in sensible hobbit-fashion it was just called New Row. It was a purely Bywater joke to refer to it as Sharkey's End.

"Good morning!" said Bilbo, and he meant it. The sun was shining, and the grass was very green. But Gandalf looked at him from under long busy eyebrows that stuck out futher than the brim of his shady hat.
"What do you mean?" he said. "Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning weather I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?"
"All of them at once." said Bilbo.

In The Two Towers Chapter 5, when Gimli shouts "Come, come! Since Gandalf's head is now sacred, let us find one that is right to cleave!" Always liked that line.

Surely this did not begin to mine the vein of humour.

The Foreward: " Some who have read the book, or at any rate reviewed it, have found it boring, absurd, or contemptable; and I have no cause to complain, since I have similar opinions of their works, or of the kind of writing that they evidently prefer. "

And the story hadn't even started yet!

The bit when Eomer and Aragorn meet in the midst of battle in the Pelennor Fields made me laugh because it made me think, ok if the foresight here works then maybe everthing will be ok. It was a pleasing moment.

Yup.

What a great bunch of reminders! Good thread!

Sam to Frodo at the Council of Elrond: 'A nice pickle we have landed ourselves in, Mr. Frodo!' A bit of a grim laugher, but still...

Also when Gimli threatens Eomer for his rash words regarding the Lady of the Wood, and all the téte â téte in that regard between them throughout the story.

I laughed incredibly much - for several minutes, and repeatedly - when I have first read in the Hobbit the poem Bilbo uses against the spiders (the second one - Lazy Lob and Crazy Cob, that time however translated into my native language). That was just incredibly hilarious (okay, I was like 8 or 9 at that time, but I remember exactly how I could not stop laughing). It was also the first passage I went to check once I got the books for my own for Christmas later that year - before I've been reading it from a book borrowed in the library, an older edition, and I wanted to check if the poem does still have the same translation. It did. I spent several minutes walking around the appartement and reciting the poem aloud.

There were surely more moments, but this is the most memorable one coming to my mind.
