Yes I just returned from 25 Hobbits.. where we were #1, now we have fallen in place.. only one spot, but the #1 site had over 150 vote, and we had only 90 something... might not seem like much, but if everyone of our 213 (I think?) members voted, the Barrow Downs would dominate!! Hmmm... third is fantastic, but it's not first. Does anyone know how to (if it's possible) send out an email, not to one person or a group of people, but just 'blurt' it out for everyone to hear? Cause' I've written up a sort of short advertisment for the downs that could be sent via email. I've often got emails sent that don't seem to be addressed to anyone in particular, but are for everyone. Anyone know how to do this trick?

Emailing

I just ran a search on Google and several other search engines with different queries such as 'Bulk Emailing Programs' and 'Bulk Emailing for Free' etc. and unfortunately Gwaihir all Bulk emailing programs cost. Btw, according to a very boring and badly laid out page, you will also need a program that searches and stores lists of email addresses, unless you happen to have an incredibly amazing memory <img src=wink.gif ALT=""> That page was probably an advertisement for the products that it said you needed; <img src=rolleyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes"> however it did list all the legal downsides and things you should and should not do - <img src=eek.gif ALT=":eek"> It took a long time to read all that. It's not worth the trouble, Gwaihir, is my advice (hmm) but if you plan advertising the downs, I suggest searching AOL, Hotmail, NBCi, MSN etc. member directories to get email addresses. (If you don't want to fork out $299 US for some crappy program that no-one has ever heard of before <img src=ohwell.gif ALT=":/"> ) I was reading an article about some Adobe Bulk Mailing product; that also took a long time, but there was a break between classes and I had nothing to do <img src=nerd.gif ALT="8o"> And then I had Latin; and my day reached it's peak. But then after an extremely long and boring meeting I had Maths. All time low. And just when I thought things could not get worse - DAT. <img src=tired.gif ALT="/I"> Design and Technology, the most boring and pointless subject on my timetable that I can't get out of. I had to complain. <img src=wink.gif ALT="">

I appreciate the concern and effort, folks. But the types of e-mails you are talking about are exactly the kind I would never use for the Barrow-Downs. Bulk e-mails are often scams and almost never wanted by the recipients. They cheapen the sender and their product. Please leave all marketing efforts for the Downs to me.

Any suggestions are always welcome, but please never implement them yourselves.

You see such a small percentage of people are true Tolkien fans. My email was a small one, with the title 'Tolkien Fanatics draw hither'. Anyone who'd never heard of Tolkien would be annoyed by it, but any fans wouldn't mind it at all. It had colour, graphics... but if you need a bulk emailer to use it, then it's doomed from the start. <img src=laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

D, does your pic exist only on your hard drive? Or is it somewhere on the Web? You need to upload it (try www.geocities.com) first, to give it an URL. Then right-click on the picture (on the net), click on 'copy URL', then paste the URL address into the relevant space on your control centre. Should work.

I personally have never voted at 25 Hobbits. (Heretic! Burn her at the stake!) I don't see the point. The Downs will continue to be a great ME site no matter what place it comes in at.
