I think Tolkien fan covers all who love Tolkein.
Tolkeinist to me implies a more in depth study of Tolkien in addition to basic appreciation of his stories.
Middle Earthling? If only!!!

Aosama, I like Ent-Hugger . Though I'm trying to imagine Treebeard's reaction to a frenzied embrace by something 1/3 his size and can't really picture him being anything but extremely puzzled.

My nearest and dearest have usually referred to me as a Tolkienphile, which is a word I rather like. Tolkienista works too, though it implies a level of militancy (in the sense of being able to recite the Silmarillion from memory and have aneurisms about whether or not Bombadil was a Maia) that I'm not prepared to live up to.

I have pronounced it Toll-kin, Toll-ken and Toll-kane, and short of how you pronounce it, I've noticed that most people know to whom you refer if familiar with JRRT. I simply prefer Tolkien Fan over any contrived names which include Tolkien in any part. Ent-hugger, that's good.

Middle-earthling is good!

But I've always refered to myself as a TOLKIENITE.

My friends are all "God, you're such a Rings freak," and I reply calmly,

"I prefer to think of myself as a TOLKIENITE. If you have a problem with that (like someone said) Elbereth be with you, friend!"

Tolkien Junkie is another good one! That's kinda funny!

Long live the age of the Geeks!!

Ent-hugger! lol. i heard somewhere Tolkienite, which describes me pretty well, seeing as tolkienist sounds really scientific and being able to reapeat LotR word for word. though Ent-hugger is my favourite.ive also heard Ringhead.i always say Tol-kee-en, even though i KNO its wrong (old habits die hard).

Some kids at school refer to me as some sort of god. I guess that's because I'm the only 6th grader that's ever read a book longer than 300 pages and lived to tell about it. I like being called a Tolkienologist, as a kid refers to me, as I plan to write my dissertation on Tolkien's work.

I think of myself as an Ent-hugging hobbit, though I've got a Rohirrim streak in me. What I usually say about this is "I'm what would have happened if Pippin and Eowyn had had a kid." scary thought.

I think Tolkeinites sounds nicer than the term Trekkies with which the unfortunate Star Trek fans are stuck with.

Tolkeinites sounds more sophisticated.

I swear I replied to this...but I guess it got lost when the forum moved...

Tolkiendili may sound Tolkienish, but it sounds too much like 'Tolkien dilly'...

I like 'Barrow Wight' personally...or Elf...but then that would not describe all Tolkien fans. But then...should we all be under one title? There are many types of Tolkien fans- film fans, book fans, both fans, book obsessors....perhaps we should come up with lots of names?

As for me, I like the term Tolkienist much better then Tolkienite, which sounds like a name of a fossil. Even though it does have the implication of a religious characteristics, but going around convincing our friends to read Tolkien and virtually forcing a lotr copy into their hands doesn't seem a lot different from going around preaching Christianity and giving out little booklets. At least, that's how I see it.

Hehe! I saw an interview by Jonathan Ross with Sean Astin and Andy Serkis on the premier of the RotK film, when Andy Serkis described the "Tolkien purists" who were up in arms at some of the "liberties" taken by the films as the Tolkienista . I thought it was rather a good label myself.

On that basis, of course, I would not describe myself as one of the Tolkienista. And I certainly don't have sufficient in-depth knowledge to pass myself off as a Tolkienologist. A more moderate and less knowledgeable Tolkienite, perhaps.

I'm a hobbit, most days.

But here's a story: I usually dress very casually for church (torn jeans? plus hobbit-shirt & jacket) , and that was OK with my pastor until I started leading worship. Then he bugged me to tidy up a bit. So I wore my very best elven-dress to Sunday morning service.

I was up at the microphone just before the service when he said: "You look nice."

I said: "I'm an elf."

Dead silence. So I started the service.

I've always gone by Tolkienite, but I'm growing pretty fond of Ent-hugger. I think, that as the frequenters of different sections of the 'Downs have their own nicknames (for example, Mirthies), there's no reason why different types of fans can't have thier own. Example: Ringer might go for a movie fan, and Tolkienite/ist for a book fan. But then again, there are specialized interests, as I've noticed by the developing terms (thank you, Keeper of Dol Goldur) that I've heard in reference to myself: Glorfiholic, Viggonite, Faraboriholic... Why can't we all just pick what we prefer, instead of trying to decide on one name?

Fea

PS- It's Trekker, not Trekkie

Ringies seems to be used a lot, as well, but only really by those who profess to fans themselves.... I've never been called a Ringie by a non-fan.

Ring But...

... the Ring is... bad. I don't want to be called a Ringer or a Ringie any more than I'd want the nickname "Frodo's Torment."

Silmarilli? .... Mithrillite?

Wood Elf. Hobbit. Sinda, Noldo.

Even "Tolkien Fan" is better than ... Ringer. "Frodo's Torment." Augh!

Middle-Earthling - too sci-fi
Ringies - never have heard that, but it just sounds weird
Ringers - I always connect that label more with movie fans, than with fans of the books and works of Tolkien

But the only label I personally really dislike is Tolkien Freak, because it just makes us sound like we're crazy or something
Anything else is fine by me

Hm... I've heard Tolkien Freak. I take it as a compliment that they've noticed, but the freak part gets to me a bit. That's when I want to start going around saying "He's a Mario freak" "He's a greasy food freak" "She's a makeup freak" "They're Legend of Zelda freaks". Honestly... who really cares what other people are interested in? It's our lives and our brains. Just because we choose to be interested in things that can EXPAND our intellect... Yep. I guess that makes us freaks. I still prefer Tolkienite.

I think that Tolkienists sounds ok, though I've never been called that before. People just call me "That girl that likes lotr"
So compared to that term, I'd say Tolkienists is a reasonably good name for us!

Encaitare is a guest of Tom Bombadil.
I like "Tolkienite" and "Tolkienista," the second one makes being a LotR freak sound fashionable! I have also heard "Ringnut," but I think my favorite is "Middle-earthling."

And it can be "Trekkie" or "Trekker."

Proud to be a Middle-earthling and a Trekkie! ::hugs Grima and Spock plushies::
