Can anyone here tell me what Gimli says to Haldir in Lothlorien, in the Extended Version? Or maybe it's just a bunch of nonsense...either way I'd like to put the issue to rest with myself! [ August 06, 2003: Message edited by: The Only Real Estel ]

We discussed this a while back here, and I think it came to the point that what he said wasn't even Dwarvish language. Someone tried to translate it, but it wouldn't translate. I think only one word could be made from it and it was like "what" or something like that. But it's practically nonsense.

It can be made up but it is supposed to mean "I spit upon your grave".<A HREF="http://www.elvish.org/gwaith/movie_fotr.htm#ishkhaqwi" TARGET=_blank>Here</A> are Gimli's words in Lorien explained.

I think Gimli intended to put a curse on Haldir. Unfortunately it worked.

Sorry O.R.E. - But I think that German translator was talking through his hat, and offers no basis for his rather lame version of Gimli's smart-mouthed remark to Haldir.Here's a thread that I started on the same question - <A HREF="http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=001355" TARGET=_blank>Smile when you say that, Gimli!</A> - and there is a link mentioned in it regarding Dwarvish words and word fragments. I have a feeling that the Tolkien linquists hired by P.J. just made up Dwarvish "sounds" based on the Good Professor's notes. Whatever the origin of the phrase, I still think Gimli could have come up with something more dissin' than "I spit on your grave." (Ooooooohhhhhhhh! I'm scared!)

I agree that he just babbles on about something then says "I sounded so stupid" or something like that. He was just stammering while trying to think of how to ask "just one hair from your golden head." But thats just me.
