The Barrow-Downs forum has 292 registered members. I thought it would be interesting to see just how many of those memebers are truly active. So I went back and tallied activity in the last 10 days (16-25 March 2001). I only looked in THE BOOKS.

In the last ten days 43 members have posted in 30 topics in THE BOOKS.

Not including me, those 42 members average 200 total posts since they first joined the board. Their total combind posts are 8410, 51% of the boards total of 16429. That means 14% of our members are active (in the last 10 days) and have provided over half of our posts (since the baord was founded).

Of the 42 active members, eight had less than 10 posts total and 21 have over 100 posts (11 of those over 250).

Wow !

I think alot of people look at the boards but never answer or take part in them. I mean, I can only partake from my PC at home. Because during the week I'm at college and the university internet is retarted concerning this message board.

Re: Recent Activity in THE BOOKS

Very true, Glorfindel. A lot of people enjoy reading what other people say, only occasionally putting in a remark here and there. My 'Wow' was actually a positive one. 42 active members is not bad at all. I remember when the board has 42 members total!

Re: Recent Activity in THE BOOKS

I'll second that Glorfindel. I can only check in here 2 or 3 times a week now, and then only for a brief time because of my work schedule (not to mention I have a wife and 4 kids). I enjoy just reading the different topics/comments and chatting for a bit.

R. Kittle: You mention a time when the board only had 42 members total. When did this board start?

Actually, I remember a time when this board had one member, me. That was in May 2000, less than a year ago.

True, true. I check the board everyday but rarely post, mostly because most of what I want to say is already posted.

Re: Recent Activity in THE BOOKS

I, like so many others, mainly just enjoy listening to the conversations here on the forum. For those of us who like LotR, but dont know lots of the little details that are discussed, the forum is a good way to learn more about the books. Just wanted to say thanks for creating something so great!!

"We're all-what was the term, oh yeah-Tolkien geeks! "

I prefer the term[s] student [or scholar] of the Legendarium.

Lindil is oft found on posting on the Silmarillion Project at the Barrowdowns and working on a new Elven/Christian discussion boardOsanwe-Kenta 'The dwindling Men of the West would often sit up late into the night, and awaken early before dawn- exchanging lore and wisdom such as they possessed , so that they should not fall back into the mean and low estate of those , who never knew or more sadly still, had indeed rebelled against the Light.'

Re: Recent Activity in THE BOOKS

Lindil, that title fits you quite nicely. I, on the other hand am most assuredly a Tolkien Geek. I don't know Quenya, or any other ME language, I've only read the Silmarillion twice, and I have yet to finish the UT. You, on the other hand, truly are a student of the work. All hail the Tolkien Geeks, who are desperately trying to catch up on their reading!

I have visited the Downs for quite a while and check this board a lot, but I don't post that often. Maybe I'm not that opinionated.

As a rule,I check the board at least once a day. I don't post all the time though. As was stated above (!) many times someone else has said what I would have on a subject.
That just indicates how active this board really is compared to some of the corpses out there, where there have not been new posts for months.

As some have said, others have already written what they might have said, and then some are so expert that they have a great deal more knowledge of the books than the rest of us. The third thing to consider if you are not posting very often is that you want to continue to enjoy this board and not burn out. And I can only add my thanks to R. Kittle for making this board what it is today.
