Ring Buckland Bridge or Maggot´s visitor?
There´s a blueish kind of picture showing a hobbit in front of what looks like a Black Rider. The hobbit is carrying a lantern and is wearing a hat. Who is the hobbit?

Having not seen the picture I can only guess it from what the book says: Meriadoc Brandybuck walked up out of the dark and scared the heck out of them until he uncovered his lantern.
The Barrow-Wight (RKittle)
I usually haunt The Barrow-Downs and The Barrow-Downs Middle-Earth Discussion Board.

I think the picture(I've seen it)is Farmer Maggot's nocturnal encounter with the Nazgul.

Tall ships and tall kings Three times three, What brought they from the foundered land Over the flowing sea?
Oh!

Oh.... I think I know now what picture you are talking about.
That would be the Black Rider asking Gaffer Gamgee if he's seen Baggins.
The Barrow-Wight (RKittle)
I usually haunt The Barrow-Downs and The Barrow-Downs Middle-Earth Discussion Board.
Edited by: RKittle at: 4/16/01 4:37:31 pm

I beleive you are talking about this picture:

Well, you say it is Farmer Maggot. The only problem with that is when the Rider talked to Farmer Maggot, he was at his house, not on the road. And because that never happened to Merry in the story, I am guessing that it is another change from the book made by the Movie people to add more "suspense". When I think is most likely is that:

1.) In the movie Merry is going to be chased by the Rider when he is coming back along the road from Crickhollow, somehow losing the Rider, and finding Farmer Maggot in his wagon with Frodo. (This will mean that Merry wont be riding a pony, which he did in the book.)

2.) They will change it so Farmer Maggot walks them to the bridge and on the way back he is waylaid by the Rider.

Either situation seems stupid to me, seeing as it didnt happen in the book. I might be wrong, but I dont think anyone can explain it yet.
_______________________________________________ ________________________________________________ “One of the candidates had mercifully left one of the pages with no writing on it ,which is the best thing that can possibly happen to an examiner, and I wrote on it: “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” Names always generate a story in my mind. Eventually I thought I’d better find out what hobbits were like. But that’s only the beginning.” - J.R.R. Tolkien.
