Memories...

Ah, what a worthless thread this is, but I'd like to share it all the same. I was just watching TV, when I saw a new Duracell battery commercial. It brought back wonderful memories of the first time I read the Lord of the Rings. Here's the link, depending on which plug-in you have on your computer. I can remember myself as that child with the flashlight, reading my centeniary edition of the book in bed. He's somewhere at the beginning of TTT, possibly around "The Uruk-Hai" or "The Departure of Boromir", such thrilling chapters, those. Perhaps I'll read it for the 8th time tonight...

Alas, for some dumb reason the advertisement won't load for me (it freezes after about two sentences and won't go any farther), but I think I've seen the one you're talking about. And yes, that was me too... I read the Hobbit for the first time by light of those Christmas Candles that people put in windows. My mother used to hook it to the windowsill with duct tape so I couldn't steal it and use it as a flashlight at night, but I'd just sit by the window with a blanket over my head and read anyway.

I feel left out... by the time I read the Hobbit, I was already old enough (by my parents' standards- or maybe they just gave up by then) to stay up till unearthly hours, reading by the light of my unicorn night light. Okay so maybe I'm not that old.

The commercial about the batteries is this...

A little boy is shown reading a book. Then the Rocky Mountain Rescue team is shown. Both scenes using some sort of flashlight with a Duracell battery inside. THe commercial says...{re-wording a bit due to my lack of memory}

"Whether you are rescuing someone in a deep cave, or just exploring a world of Wizards and Hobbits, Duracell will be there."

I love seeing that commercial. And yes, it brings back many fond memories I've had since I discovered LOTR. Thanks for making this topic, Iarwain. I am in a happy state of mind now.

Arghh! Sorry, but I dislike the tone of adverts which play on peoples' emotions to sell mundane products such as batteries. So, we have Duracell to thank for our mountain rescue teams and childhood memories of reading under the covers. Yeah, right!

Anyway, I used to sit in my bedroom doorway reading LotR by the light of the landing, so I have British Electricity (or whatever it was called back then) rather than Duracell to thank for my childhood memories. [img]smilies/tongue.gif[/img] [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img]

Here, here, Saucepan Man! I have to admit, I do not use Duracell batteries either. I use electricity...the kind you get from plugging a lamp into a slot in the wall. Duracell was never there for me, but I give them props for at least mentioning Hobbits in the commercial.

There was another commercial I saw rather frequently also. I think it might have been Virizon Wireless, but I can't remember. I could have been Digital Cable. All I know is it showed a clip from FOTR on it, and it reminded me of when I first saw the movie in theaters. Wow, that was a long time ago. And it's sad to think that all the excitement for the movies will be ending come December. When the last...3rd...ending of the great trilogy will be played, ah, such a sad time to think of.

Anyway, yeah, that was another commercial.

I remember standing on the rocks in shin-deep water as the waves rolled in, gazing out over the wide lake and imagining that it was the Sea, and that Elvenhome was not that far away.

Or sometimes I imagined that it was The Anduin, and I would see Boromir's funeral boat drift by as if lit by moonlight.

And sometimes I just stood and sang.

The reason this commercial hits me so dearly is that when I was a youngster, I had a large collection of flashlights, from Maglight to Snakelight to keychains. I've always like Duracell batteries too. And of course, I've always loved Tolkien... [img]smilies/rolleyes.gif[/img]

I have quite a large imagination, and as a child (not very long ago!) I would pretend that I was an elven maiden. My backyard was the kingdom I lived in, and my own home was under the spreading maple tree. I suppose the kingdom was quite a bit like Lothlorien, and I had alot of fun with my own little adventures. [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img] Wow, it's really nice remembering this stuff!

Ah, memories. It wasn't too long ago I read LotR, I would say I was doing homework, and read on my bed, usually as the light from the setting sun came in. I would imagine that what I could see from my window was Lothlorien; the trees on the neighbours lawn against our fence with the sad, amazing gold light shining through seemed to me all that was beautiful and tragic. Oh and before that, Moria was that gloomy autumn twilight, and I was always far too lazy to turn on my lamp.

I've got quite a few fond memories. My brother and I used to 'borrow' yardsticks from around the house and have swordfights outside. My fonder memories though, are of me and my cousin. Rather than playing 'house' or anything 'girly', we would have scenarios and we would 'act' out whatever we came up with. It was pretty much playing 'house' except with much cooler stuff happening. We would go out back way behind my house and pretend that we were rangers and that we had to make camp. Or that we were Elven princesses running away because for some god-forsaken reason, our 'fathers' were making us marry humans! Ah the good old days when 'quests' to find dangerous artifacts in our back yards were as real as my mother's voice telling us to stop digging up the lawn...

Haha, this reminds me... We had an entire kingdom (called Soromos), complete with provinces (names stolen from Tolkien and the Bible), history (of how we discovered our Middle-Earthian heritage and founded a Tolkien-oriented kingdom) and an order of Sucession. I was queen of course, and of elven descent. ;-) Wouldn't be a kid's fantasy without it.

Every now and then I miss it.

I did that too. Even though I was the only one of my siblings to play like that, I would make up fantastic and complicated histories for my 'characters' and add many other imaginary people to interact with. I was quite fortunate to have a best friend who thought the way I did and shared some of these adventures with me. Thanks for the thread, Iarwain! It's been really nice to remember this stuff, even though, being 16, it's not all that far back. [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]
