Rankin Bass RotK

I watched the Bakshi film at it's premiere in London and was totally unimpressed. It has taken me until yesterday (8th July), to watch The Rankin Bass film. I couldn't stop laughing at the toad like orcs and The Frog Prince Gollum. The Elvenking (Thranduil) looks like The King of the Dead. The Ringwraith's on flying horses, Didn't anyone read the book?. The songs were awful, and the pronuctiation was worse, where is Goragorath or Sirith Ungol. On a positive note, at least the got The Witch-king/Gandalf confrontation right, and the Arwen (sorry that should read Eowyn/Witch-king scene almost right. I'm off to watch their Hobbit now, I need a laugh.

Arwen / Witch-king scene? You must be thinking of the the PJ movies?

The fact that I was a child when I saw this in the early 80's lends it a certain nostalgic aspect, although I can't look at it in the same way now.
I don't think the songs were all that bad, though the singer, Glenn Yarbrough certainly is an acquired taste. The 'Leave Tomorrow Til It Comes' song, in particular always seemed fitting for the scene it was used for.
I thought then, and now, that John Huston's voice was perfect for Gandalf.

I was thinking mainly of the speech Eowyn makes, got the name wrong in my excitement..... Yes you are right the voice of Gandalf is good. The animation/drawings were awful, almost as bad as the Hildebrandt Brothers laughable interpretations, which I cannot abide.

Just like scratching one's fingernails across a blackboard or chewing aluminum foil.

Couldn't think of a better way to turn people off to RotK.

Which movie is it that has Gollum masquerading as the King of Mirkwood?

Gollum as Thranduil: We hates the elvieses with their glowing eyes, precious.

Legolas: You're... You're...

G:What is it, precious? *face changes* No we like the elvieses.

L: GOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

Boo Radley has just left Hobbiton.
I remember watching the Bakshi film when it first came out. I think I was in my 20's then.
It was... horrible.
Then I watched the Rankin/Bass film.
Afterwards, to alieviate the pain, I massaged my skull with a ballpeen hammer.
