Ring name generators are a hoax!

i tried generatign my name and it didnt look at all related to my name, so i removed the last letter of my last name and it made a totally new name. Try typping in AA or AB and you get different names that sound fine; they are just using a couple letters to pick from a random list. Argh! I thought someoen hade actually come up with something I could use. At any rate, for those of you interested in generating good names, Ebon works pretty well and is shareware...search for it or something. I found it after making my own name generator that randomly affixed prefixes/suffixes etc.

Well, duh! There aren't really hobbits so you really can't get a real hobbit name, can ya? Same for Dwarves and Elves. The name generators are a toys made for enjoyment. What were you expecting?

And as for generating good names, the names each of the generators create are good Elf, Dwarf and Hobbit names. And Orc, too!

Yer just upset because the Dwarf name for stuh505 is Lóin Coalanvil

Ebon is a nice tool. Many Tolkienian languages, and good names.
However, I do not understand why our name generators should be a hoax and Ebon the grand revelation?

Ebon spits out the names completely at random. Our name generators correspond to the user's name and thus make sure that only one in a zillion gets the same name as you; and that your name is always the same no matter how often you try. This isn't the case with Ebon's engine, which also has a fairly limited store of names and roots.

Our name generators are online and free for everybody to use. Ebon is shareware which you have to download first.

Ebon is nice when you quickly need a name for an rpg character or else. But if you want to find your true Hobbit/Dwarf/Orc/Elf name ours are way more fun. Of course they don't work on divine translation, but on some fuzzy math. But a hoax? Hardly so. They're for fun!

A "real" generator would be great, but a lot of work. And many of our last names would be a nightmare to translate.

I understand the disappointment, but there are some very cool elvish names to be had, and funny Hobbit ones.

The astrology entries in the newspaper and web are usually WAY off, but I've never written to say so, even when some people take them very seriously.

RE: A "real" generator would be great, but a lot of work. And many of our last names would be a nightmare to translate.

You are right on that, you would need to research each nameto find out what it's old enlgish or other archiac root meaning was.

For example My name is Eugene if you were to trace back to the archiac meaning of the root you get roughly Wellborn/noble. Taking that you would have to do a major amount of research to find the orcish, sindarian, quenyen(ok mb this wouldn't be so hard) tranlations. In short it would take years to put top gether such a program especially since most tolkien linguistic papers are not available anymore or were never released by CT

I know archiac meanings of my names(first and last) and so I'll gdo a little research and get back to you

A fun excersize would be to find the meaning of all your own names, and if possible, find an elvish equivalent.

I don't know how you would do it in other languages.

Mine would be "From the Grey Fort" (First name)
"From the Linden Tree City" (Middle)
"Waterfall into a Pool" (Last Name)

Simply impossible in Orcish I think, but do-able in Hobbit, Elf or Dwarvish (Dwarvish?). I can settle for the generator though.

Here is a link with "real" Elvish names:
http://www.elvish.org/elm/names.html
The original name has been translated into Quenya, to give you a "real" Elvish name.
Hope you find this useful!

PS - My translated Elvish name is Arwen!

Yup...and I'm Mįme according to that (the name Rachel, which means "ewe"). Actually: the Sindarin word for sheep is Maama, so if I were to have a Sindarin name, it would be Maama(-iel).

And Ayn is my middle name: the Russian version of Anne, which is the Latinized form of Hannah, which would be Almie or Almare or Eruanne in Quenya. Hannah means "favor" or "grace" or "bliss". Joyous is "Meren" in Sindarin. And good fortune (which I guess is grace of sorts) is Galu.

I like those names...

Actually: we were just talking about these things the other night...

The idea of your "real" Elvish name still amuses me. Most people act like their given names have true meaning, when in reality they simply come from a relative or were chosen simply because the parents thought they sounded nice. For instance, my name is Ronald which comes from Reginald which means King (according to babynames.com - elvish.org says its means 'advice ruler'). No one in our family for as far back as we can trace was royalty. So for me to call myself Veurotur would be just as meaningless as calling myself Alcthon (which came from the Barrow-Downs Name Generator). Sure, the BD generator creates random results, but it will give each Ronald his own unique name because it also takes into account his middle and last names.

The name generator said I was an Evil Hobbit, so right off the bat I knew it was totally accurate!

But try typing in an actual Middle-earth name, like Frodo Baggins, or Peregrin Took. Was Frodo a Prancing Ringwraith? Was Pippin a Laughing Balrog? I don't think so...

But the generator IS fun, especially the Orc names...beware of Sharthak the Bloody-handed mwahahahahaha.

well, my familys from india, and my name translates in english to: victory carpenter.
to get it in elvish would be quite simple, i just get a dictionary
of course, foreign names would also present a problem. even if you had every single british surname on a real name generator, i could come along and cause it to implode

When I first came to this site, and they had the old name generator, when you could choose which type of name you wanted to generate to, my elvish name was Veardaiel. Then when I returned, I noticed that they had changed it, and now my name generates to one of the following...Sirithmelloniel,
Sirithmellonien, or Sirithmellonwen, and personally, I like Veardaiel better. So I think I will stick with it. Those names sound too much like Cirith-Ungul.

Its a little obvious its a hoax, but that doesnt stop it putting together nice names, which have nice meaning sometimes. I got Amanaduial off the Barrowdowns name-generator, with just my first and last name, and which my first, middle and last name, its Carneiach, the account I used when I lost the password of this one and had typed in my email wrong, but which is now deleted, I think. My dwarvish name is Nīm Skycryer- hey, it doesnt seem totally unrelated, although it is random- I get called Mym in real life. Besides, my name backwards is Belethfacwen- already a user on the barrowdowns.

Actually, The Council of Elrond has a "Name Generator" where you type in your name, and they've translated each name, and translated it into Elvish if you want a "real" name of sorts. For example, Rachel means "ewe", so I'd be Tawlaes or Laeshaw. Going by my middle name, I would be Eruant, Eruanneth, Eruanniel, Eruannien, Eruannwen Lūth Lūthiel, Lūthien, or Lūthwen.

However, the Barrow-Downs Name Generator is still my favorite, as the names all have really great meanings (not always nice, but great). Also, if you need a name for an RPG or something, I recommend the Barrow-Downs one, as you can type in random names and find Elvish names, whereas they don't have every name on the Council of Elrond yet.
