White Tree Password

This is a new game. I freely admit to having stolen the idea from another Tolkien board. The rules are as follows:

1. The questioner gives a series of questions, each leading to an answer (which the questioner will confirm when guessed).

2. The first letters of the answers form the Password (see example below).

3. Traditionally, the questions can be (but aren't required to be) on the tricksy side, and can include “cryptic clues”, as well summarized by The Saucepan Man here (i.e., anagrams, synonyms, "sounds like" clues, etc.)

4. The first person to guess the “Password” wins the game, although you still have to solve any remaining questions.

5. Once the game gets going (if it does get going), you’re allowed to tinker with Rule #2. [

Simple example:

(1) Noldor, Sindar or Vanyar.
(2) First Telerin deserter.
(3) Monsters of the Last Desert.
(4) Not a man, to the Witch King’s regret.

Answers:

(1) Elf.
(2) Lenwë.
(3) Wereworms.
(4) Éowyn.

Password: ELWË.

- - - - - - - - - - -

Here’s a first puzzle:

(1) The Nostradamus of Brethil, last seen hurling a sad prophecy.
(2) City that played the Stones’ hits.
(3) Young star of Gondor, or a confused pet rodent?
(4) From Edith to Priscilla.
(5) (She was) gold on top, silver on the bottom.
(6) Fair land between two rivers, did Peregrin visit here when muddled?
(7) It flows from . . . here.
(8) Soul man with a broken crown, figuratively. Lightning was spotted there.
(9) Scholar, linguist, poet of the Elder Days. But he didn’t smoke a pipe.
(10) One needs to be a porter to pass here.

I'll venture three guesses:

(1) Brandir
(6) Eregion, perhaps?
(7) Could it be Morthond?

Rats ! All three wrong. But thanks for trying, I thought this game might die an early death.

You're on the right track (i.e. in the right place in the Silmarillion), I think, for #1. But Brandir wasn't a seer, was he?

For #6 -- see Saucepan Man's post (linked above) for the "cryptic" meaning of "muddled". HINT: what was Peregrin's title?

For #7 -- No, FROM HERE.

Okay, thanks for the clues! Now I believe I know the answer to two of them:

(1) Glaurung?
(6) This would be the Naith of Lorien

(8) Amon Sul? As A mon = man sul = soul? Frodo saw lightning on the hill when Gandalf was fighting off the Nazgul.

Edit: You have a point, Luthien_Tinuviel.
Silly of me not to notice. This is a great game!

Arestevana, I think you're right, because "soul man" fits perfectly as an anagram for "Amon Sul".

I will venture a guess at 9 and 10:

9- Pengolodh
10- Rath Dinen (or perhaps Sarn Gebir-- where the fellowship had to carry the boats over a "portage way"?)

Also, if it helps someone figure out "Edith" was Tolkien's wife, and "Priscilla" was his daughter. I can't get the clue, however.

Sophia

The corect guesses are noted below:

(1) Glirhuin (A harping seer of Brethil, last seen hurling a sad prophecy.)
(2) Ondolindë (City that played the Stones’ hits.)
(3) Bergil (Young star of Gondor, or a confused pet rodent?)
(4) From Edith to Priscilla. <--
(5) Idril ((She was) gold on top, silver on the bottom.)
(6) Naith (Fair land between two rivers, did Peregrin visit here when muddled?)
(7) Withywindle (It flows from . . . here.)
(8) Amon Sûl (Soul man with a broken crown, figuratively. Lightning was spotted there.)
(9) Rúmil (Scholar, linguist, poet of the Elder Days. But he didn’t smoke a pipe.
(10) Sarn Gebir (One needs to be a porter to pass here.)

HINT:

(4) One of Tolkien's "works", sort of.

Great job Sophia !! "Bergil" also includes gil = "star".

Of course, next time there will be no extra hints.

You can start concocting your puzzle while the last few clues are solved (which should be even easier now that everyone knows the first letters).

Yes on both accounts!

Glirhuin (a near anagram of hurling) was the seer/harper of Brethil who prophesied that the Stone of the Hapless would never be destroyed; in fact it survived the War of Wrath as Tol Morwen.

Idril had golden hair and was nicknamed Celebrindal, "silver-foot".

Only # 4 to go -- c'mon, it's as easy as ABC.

Well, J.R.R.T. called Edith his "Luthien" quite often..and it fits the L, I just can't think of a phrase to go with it that fits the "Priscilla" part..

Since I'm looking forward to Sophia's new Password puzzle, I'll just give the last answer. It is Letters of JRR Tolkien. (In this book, the first is to Edith, and the last to Priscilla.)

Sophia, you're up !

What a great game, Turambar.

Seems to me that the questions making up the Password can draw on many of the other types of game in the forum (straight trivia, riddles, cryptic, words in words etc).

Might I make one suggestion, though? It would be helpful if the question-setter could post the list of questions, with any correct answers already given, when confirming each correct answer. Otherwise, it might become a bit difficult keeping track of which questions have been answered correctly and which haven't.

I agree with you about how the questions could be of any type; my initial post should have just said, Be warned that "cryptic" clues are fair game (though not required).

As for your suggestion -- I agree there too, and I did do that, by continually editing the original post (to fill in correctly guessed clues). If it had gone to the next page, i would have re-posted the whole list.

So where's Sophia? I WANT A NEW PASSWORD !!!

2. Little village with Triumphant Architecture followed by a famous film flight home
3. I log lags, Lord they mix me up!
4. Elven Summer, or maybe song...
5. Nothing, Right? Nothing. Just the Mountain Fair without Val.

To add to the growing list:

#1 is Mahanaxar, the Ring of Doom outside Valimar wherein the Valar sat in council.

#3 is Golasgil (anagram of I log lags), Lord of Anfalas.

#6 is Renewer, the meaning of Aragorn's title, Evinyatar.

The Password is Maglor's Gap.

But I can't for the life of me think what #8 is.

All correct.
1. Mahanaxar A ring without a finger, older than Mirdain craft
2. Archet Little village with Triumphant Architecture followed by a famous film flight home
3. Golasgil I log lags, Lord they mix me up!
4. Laer Elven Summer, or maybe song...
5. Orocarni Nothing, Right? Nothing. Just the Mountain Fair without Val.
6. Renewer Title of what begins with "once again" but is clearly not as old.
7. Smials Underground grins.
8. Green with envy initially, then blown to either's mate (love hurts, you see...).
9. Araw The Forest Lord's first choice is uncooked!
10. Pincup Hobbit town, frequented by seamstresses and the thirsty.

Saucy, the password is indeed Maglor's Gap!

Shall I tell you what the answer to #8 is (odd, I thought it was easier than some of the others...)? Or shall I let you try to work it out?

The Saucepan Man has been trapped in the Barrow!
Question

OK, bear with me folks. It might take me a day or two to concoct something. I'll edit it in when I've come up with it.

Right, here it is.

1) Soldier of the Eldar takes protective headgear.
2) It may be useless, but it has sentimental value.
3) Present realm in the language of the locals.
4) Originally, this secret was believed to hold a birthday gift.
5) Might this fellow of the land one day take flight?
6) Nine erratically follow head of Umbar to see partner in a tempestuous marriage.
7) Northern secret agent from Spain can usurp.
8) Took home for extended break, reportedly.

Going on past performance, I don't imagine that this one will cause too much difficulty.

# 7 Incánus ? (Spain can usurp; Incánus meant "south spy" I think)

Ring

Useless? They were reforged to produce Anduril, which was a pretty useful weapon as I recall.

So that's not the answer, I'm afraid.

But you are correct on #7, Turambar (except it's "north spy").

7) Incanus: Northern secret agent from Spain can usurp.
8) Took home for extended break, reportedly.

That makes more sense.

#1 Elfhelm ?

#3 Andor ? (Elvish for land of gift*)

#6 Erendis ? (no idea why , except that it's a near-anagram of riders)

* EDIT: or Yôzâyan, same meaning but in Adûnaic (the "language of the locals") ?

Thumbs up

Well done, Turambar and Squatter. Between you, you seem to have solved most of them.

1) Elfhelm: Soldier of the Eldar takes protective headgear.
2) Mathom: It may be useless, but it has sentimental value.
3) Yôzâyan: Present realm in the language of the locals.
4) ? Originally, this secret was believed to hold a birthday gift.
5) ? Might this fellow of the land one day take flight?
6) Uinen: Nine erratically follow head of Umbar to see partner in a tempestuous marriage.
7) Incanus: Northern secret agent from Spain can usurp.
8) Long Cleeve: Took home for extended break, reportedly.

And well Done Squatter for getting the Password. It is indeed Emyn Muil. Your turn next

But, in the meantime, #s 4 and 5 remain to be solved ...

Maggot is correct. Ninglor, I'm afraid, is not - although you have the right birthday gift.
