Now that might just explain the snow-walking! We've already discussed the spiritual properties of elves, but we completely overlooked the possibility that the mystical powers belonged, not to the elf himself, but rather to his footwear!

In which case, unless his jacket is similarly enlighted, elves can make snow angels.

Dont know if we've had this one, & I'm not sure it exactly belongs here, but checking the Thornton's Bookshop site I find this curious fact regarding Bilbo's Last Song:
Quote:
TOLKIEN, J.R.R., & DONALD SWANN Bilbo's Last Song
. Albert House Press, 1992, 4to sized paperback. 4 pages in black wrappers, page 5 is printed on the inside of the rear cover.
¶ Bilbo's Last Song is a poem by J.R.R. Tolkien. It was originally entitled "Bilbo's Last Lay", but this was later changed due to the obvious difficulties over the last word. It was given by Tolkien as a gift to his secretary Joy Hill in 1966. After Tolkien's death in 1973 Hill showed the poem to Donald Swann, who liked the poem so much that he set it to music.

My theory is that he was too involved with the languages to realise the absurdity of some names or dubious meanings . .. I mean I am sorry but Tuna as a place name?

I know too well the pitfalls of teaching beginners german, the words for "go" and "father" are liable to cause mass hysteria among the young - mind you I was in a very serious and grown up choir which also suffered bouts of mass hysteria while rehearsing the Haydn "Stabat Mater"

Its probably more complicated. Tolkien was (overly??) serious about his language creation, & couldn't simply change a single word or name without changing the structure, grammar, syntax &, er.... stuff of the whole language. Quenya & Sindarin were interconnected, & he couldn't change 'Teleporno' without also changing 'Celeborn', & if he'd changed the names he'd have had to change the meaning of the roots (oo er missus!).

The main reason Tolkien's languages are so convincing is that they aren't just collections of random syllables, but 'actual' languages, with their own rules. CT points out that he wouldn't simply invent a new word for one of his languages, but would have to work out the changes that word would have undergone over, potentially, thousands of years.

I can't help feeling that he would have been fully aware of the 'double meanings' ......

I agree to a point but I doubt that Orcish was so precious that Shagrat couldn't have had a different name. My sister, who sneered at Tolkien for years until she became possibly the world oldest Leggybopper nearly crashed her car when she caught that part of the BBC adaptation on the radio ..... even with the careful stress employed by the owners of Shih Tzu dogs...

When one of the disparaging reviewers of CoH said that Thingol was the silliest name among Tolkien's characters I knew he probably didn't have a good knowledge of the oeuvre...

I think sound outweighed primary world connotations - 'Shaggratt' & 'Gorrbagg' sound harsh & brutal (& ugly), while Thingol has a generally 'soft' sound, but with a hint of 'hardness'. I suppose its the 'cellar door' thing ('English & Welsh).

However, I'm starting to wonder whether I haven't dragged this thread away from Mirth towards Books .....

I don't think that Shagrat would have been anything all that funny to Tolkien though? Given that there was a dance craze called The Shag in the early 60s, it must have been some time before teens started laughing at the 'other' meaning (given that teens are usually the first to pick up on rude words anyway).

I did a bit of research and it has been used in the "rude sense" since the 17th century although not always widespread ...after all in Australia, even on my first visit "too feel like a shag on a rock" mean to feel very tired like a seabird who has reached land after a very long swim .....

I feel sorry for new comers, particularly ones that have a non English first language. Considering that was his or hers first post (I beleive) you could have a little mercy.

I can understand your point, but I think I disagree. It was not meant to be nasty, and to be precise, it was not his/her first... okay, and seriously, and I do not have English as my first language and make about half of the typos of this thread (ok, that was exaggerating, but you get the picture ) so... I guess it's all about how seriously you take typos in general. I think they're harmless and amusing and I'm not ashamed of making them... they're just typos.

I laughed so much when I saw this. Everybody always talks about making such typos but this is the first time I actually saw one.

Yes indeed, but that's why I almost think we shouldn't do it to newcomers. They might not know yet just how harmless and amusing everyone finds this thread. Of course, it might just have occured to me as such since I'm partially shy and am always worried about offending people. So, again, I just hope that newcomers realize that that is so(not the previous sentence, but the one before it. ), and I think that in case they don't pick up on that immediately, we might want to wait a few weeks before doing so.

This post isn't meant as a disagreeing post, but rather as I see your point and here's what I meant, so if you take it otherwise, I may have made a typo somewhere....

TheGreatElvenWarrior has been trapped in the Barrow!
Whoever wrote that post also spelled Gollum incorrectly!

Mr. Holmes need not apply

Perhaps a few comments about this thread are in order. If I'm wrong, I'm sure Estelyn Telcontar, the thread starter, can correct me.

The point of this thread is not to finger publically the typo-ist. We don't put Downers in the stocks for public humiliation. Nor is it a public confessional where the previously anonymous Downer must contritely do a 'Hail Tolkien' and win absolution for the sin of a spelling mistake.

It's a place to enjoy with others the unexpected humour of twisted letters, the comedy of cursory, quick keyboarding. Leave sleuthing alleged offenders for the Werewolf games and just enjoy double entendres here.

(No naming and shaming, please, and preferably only those typos that have amusing connotations - at best, combined with your equally amusing comments and associations.)

But to deny the anit-film bias among a large crowd here is simply a denial of reality.
So there's a fair bit of nit-picking going on?

Some weird trick with blood circulation, or angsty Gandalf trying to cut open his wrists?
