Well done!

Sorry that the rest of you did not get it, may you have better luck with Piosenniel's Haiku.

No, not Frodo leaving for the West

A hint:

The haiku is a reworking of a quote from the Silmarillion. And the 'last sight' is a thing both dreadful and beautiful seen before those graced with favor die.

Oh, I know! The mariners who were lost at sea, searching for the Straight Road, were sometimes given a last sight of the Undying Lands, before they died.

Very close - but what thing exactly did they see that was both beautiful and dreadful as their last sight?

Is this Tuor who finds the armour left by Turgon by the sea and then manages to find his way in to Gondolin? maybe

Is it Boromir?

He was renowned as a warrior and made his last journey down Anduin in one of the Lorien boats. His "sin" of trying to take the ring was expiated by both his repentence and valiant attempt to save the young hobbits. The fact that the boat made it across the falls and rapids was due either to some great virtue in the boat or as a sign of "grace" ie redemption.

Small measure of joy
brave spirit doom fulfilling
pen and sword wielding

Not really worth the wait I am afraid..

Is it Merry?

"Small measure of joy"
Merry means happy, which suggests joy, and because Merry is a hobbit he's short, or small.

"brave spirit doom fulfilling"
I'm not sure here but I'm guessing this refers to the thing with the witchking and him stabbing it in the knee.

"pen and sword wielding"
he both fought, wielded the sword, and wrote the histories of the hobbits, wielded the pen.

Yep - it was about the witch king - and Merry was described as valiant by Eowyn, the spirit was also a reference to the brandy in his surname!

Over to you

Once seen never more
your name nor your form apear.
Wise words slyly spoke.

Good Luck.
(And as before clues given upon request...or, rather, so soon after request as I can get around to giving them.)

I'll guess Sauron:

He was seen once in a pleasing shape as Annatar. Then he was not to be seen in physical shape, nor have his name spoken. And he was very persuasive and seemed very wise when he made the Elves trust him.

Wow, good guess but not at all what I had in mind (mostly because that never occurred to me). It is interesting though how our minds work in such truely different ways...on such truely different scales...

Is it Melkor

"Once seen never more"- refers to the battle with fingolfin, where he never again came out of Angband
"your name nor your form apear"- He was cursed by Feanor and the name "Melkor" was never used again, so it was cahnged to Morgoth
"Wise words slyly spoke."- deals with his deception of the Noldor in Valinor

In light of your hint, I thought of the fox that met the hobbits outside the Shire. It fits...somehow.
