Awhile ago I wanted to find out more about Bombadil, and I figured this book would be a pretty good start, but I was troubled to find it was not in print, and when Amazon.com did find it, it was well over $150.. needless to say in my current unemployed status I cant spend money out on a whim as that... So I was wondering, has anyone read this book? And if so, what is it like, meaning its content and such.. I was just wondering and would appreaciate any information. Thanks

Re: The Adventures of Tom Bombadil

The Adventures of Tom Bombadil are included in a book called "The Tolkien Reader", available in paperback in the United States and I beleive in the UK. This book also includes Tree and Leaf and other materials.

Adventures is primarily a collection of poems about Tom as well as other poems "traditional" to the Shire. Some are included in LoTR such as the Man in the Moon Came Down Too Soon.

were kindled clear, and waxing bright
shone like stars that in the North
above the reek of earth leap forth."

If you look around enough, you should also be able to find a second-hand copy. (I have two copies of it, one which is mum's (she got it as a prize at school), and the other which was in a volume with Farmer Giles of Ham.)

Oh I forgot to mention this so I shall do so now, although its not a major point. When amazon found it, it was a second hand copy from a library somewhere.... I forget where, but I was ensured that it wouldnt be in such bad condition, but $150 was quite alot anyway..

another edition

recently in the u.s. a version of pretty much all f JRRT's shorter work came out called 'Tales from the perilous realm[s?]' it has basically all the tolkien reader material + Smith of Wooten Major [my favorite of all his short peices].

Lindil is often found on posting on the Silmarillion Project at the Barrowowns and working on his own board Osanwe-Kenta[/i]- 'The dwindling Men of the West would often sit up late into the night, and awaken early before dawn- exchanging lore and wisdom such as they possessed , so that they should not fall back into the mean and low estate of those , who never knew or more sadly still, had indeed rebelled against the Light.'

*Frowns*
I read tales from the perilous realms - Niggle, poems, Tom Bombadil (that was all poems too) and Farmer Giles of Ham.
What Smith of Wooten Major?

I could be wrong . I have seen it a few times and thought for sure it had smith, otherwise it is the same as 'Tolkien reader'.
I will go peek at amazon and see if there is a description which will clarify.

Smith is in there

from amazon:

Quote:
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
The definitive collection of J.R.R.Tolkien's four acclaimed
modern classic fairy tales, finally together in a volume which
reaffirms his place as a master storyteller for readers young and old.

The fat and unheroic Farmer Giles of Ham is called upon to do
battle with the dragon Chrysophylax; Niggle the painter sets out
to paint the perfect tree in Leaf by Niggle; hobbits, princesses,
dwarves and trolls partake in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil; and
Smith of Wootton Major journeys to the Land of Faery via the
magical ...

the rest of the description was not worthy of the book. but it does seem to be included in that version.
Waht occurs to me now is that the Essay 'On Fairy -stories is prob not in the collection, but a peek at amaz. will reveal that for the curious.
