Yes, I had been pondering whether or not to join this site and when I visited recently, I saw that there were 4999 members and if I registered immediatly, I could have the spot of Member #5000. Sure enought, right after I registered, It said, 5000 registered members ..... Newest member: Tulkas the Mighty (me)
But, my member number is clearly not 5000!! What happened?? |

5000 members was the magic number we were shooting for before cleaning up our member rosters. That number has come and gone, and now we will be purging those accounts that are no longer active. Accounts that will be deleted include those with zero posts and those with no activity for more than six months. We are doing this manually and in no hurry, but over time you will see our membership total drop dramatically as we do this. The purpose of this is to relieve the strain caused by having 5000+ members, each of which has 2-20 files attached to their account. By deleting several hundred accounts, we will actually be ridding our server of 20,000+ files. This will aid greatly in our periodic forum backup procedures. Thanks for continuing to support the Downs! *** EDIT *** If your account is deleted and you are active, please contact me with your member # and I'll restore it. We are now down to fewer than 4000. Just out of curiosity, how low are we going to go? And does this mean that we'll start having repeated numbers, as future people join? That would greatly confuse the search function.

We'll probably level off somewhere under 3000 members. The deletions will affect nothing but the membership total. New members will continue to get a new number. For instance, our newst member is corman, who is #5091. That will be a way for us to continue to see how many people have actually registered at the Downs.
