Such questions are probably better-placed in Novices & Newcomers though

Hopefully some place that teaches not to end sentences with prepositions.

In some editions of the Silmarillion, there's a kind of index of the meanings of word parts. It helps somewhat, but not everything is in there. Oh, and can anyone tell me what the name Finduilas means? I know it has something to do with hair(fin) but beyond that, I'm clueless

This question isn't a book discussion, so the thread has been moved to the Novices and Newcomers forum. Please read and post there.

Another site that might be of help to you is Council Of Elrond. Doing a quick search through the fora of this board might turn up some other sites as well. Have fun!
Peace

Like Legolas said, Ardalambion is the best. Quenya course--if you can get through the 1st lesson (it's 21 pages if you print it out) on pronounciation it's the best course you'll find anywhere.
Sindarin--there isn't a formal course but the article is pretty enlightening, though the section on plurals and mutation is not for the faint of heart (I haven't even tried the mutation section yet). Good luck!

ardalambions quenya course is awesome!i have studied it for a while (60 pages) and i'm only in the beginning.
i never thought that i could make reasonable sentences in quenya on my own but i can!!!it's an amazing feeling to be able to do all the exercises without any mistakes...like:translate into quenya - the woman is watching the greatest ship

The Council of Elrond is one of the best sites! Thanks all who recommended it.
Hmmm....Elvish is such a nice language to learn becuase, since nobody (with the exception of LOTR fans like ourselves) speaks it, you can sort of make your own kind of Elvish, that suits you. If you know what I'm saying...

Hm, present-day elvish dialects. There's something to think about...

of Mordor. I think I have a Quenya (High-Elven), I think I have a file on how to speak it. It my have been deleted. But I'm sticking to the good old Black Speech. The Witch King of Angmar (Marroc Underhill)

I know this is off-topic, and sorry about that, but where do you learn the Black Speech at?
Peace

This is kind of off-topic as well, but it's been bugging me for ever. How do you pronounce the TH in Thain? Is it pronounced like THE or like THAI or what?

Or just go to www.yahoo.com and in the "Search" black at the top of the page type in "The Black Speech" and hit the "Search" icon. Then when it is done searching click on the one that says ~Black Speech~.

Ardalambion has a section on "Orcish and the Black Speech." It doesn't have very many words though.

You inspired me to start a web site on
the languages of Middle-Earth. So far it only has The Black Speech, and no news but I just created it today. You can directly to it at http://www.webspawner.com/users/mord...09/index.html, or go through my web site at http://www.angelfire.com/wizard2/sergeviper309/ Hope you visit. Droggo

Ardalambion is the coolest site for learning elvish, orcish, or any thing else. I printed out both Sindarin and Quenya ( my parental units kind of freaked out with the amount of paper it took ) There's also a dictionary type site , www.endor.com/~disbrow/elflang.html
It has a lot of words, mostly sindarin, though. i'm trying to learn elvish too, so every little bit helps.
