Sting winter in Mirkwood

Is it never winter in Mirkwood (or other places with elves)? I mean, with snow and ice. The elves could go ice skating. That would look nice.

They must have winter, because Galadriel said that they hade come to Lorien in its winter. I like the idea of elves in snow, but legolas didnt seem to impressed at the snow on Caradaras.

Mirkwood was no diffrent to any other place in Arda, in the fact that there could be snow-fall there.(The Shire, with the exception of the Northfarthing recived little snow. I expect that the south recived little snow as well.)

Snow is said to cover the top of Taniquetil, the Mountain of Manwe, and snow was especially beloved of Ulmo.

When Galadriel said they had come to 'Lorien in its winter, I always took it to mean in the winter of its life i.e. it was now fading. As in:

Quote:
O Lorien! The Winter comes, the bare and leafless Day
...but I can't find the proper quote, so I don't know.

Anyway, to the original question. Legolas says:

Quote:
but choose... for running light over grass and leaf or over snow - an Elf.
...so they probably do have snow, as that implies he's come across it before and knows that Elves can run lightly over it. And I doubt that snow would keep away from specific areas of Middle Earth just because the Elves lived there.

Ice-skating Elves? It's probable, I guess. Although they'd be so irritatingly graceful... Hee hee! Imagine an ice-skating Elf falling over! Or Elven snowball fights?
