Sting I say, dear Bombadil...

This forum has a love for speculation and I have a subject that i'd like to read some speculation on.

What do you suppose Gandalf and Bombadil talked about when Gandalf went to see him after the War was over?

Tolkien

The Great Music, the Fate of Men, what it was like to be back with Eru again, The End, and whether the Glorfindel of Rivendell was the same as the Glorfindel of Gondolin.

However, most importantly of all, between them they would have been able to present to each other the definitive answers to the two great burning questions of Middle earth.

Gandalf told Tom if Balrogs have wings.
Tom told Gandalf exactly who and what he is.

they probably spoke of the fate of middle earth with no elves or wizards, and answered each others unanswered questions about current happenings.

1420!

Probably about anything and everything except the Ring and what went with it. After the last year and half, Gandalf was probably just about Middle-Earthed, Sauron'd and Fate-Of-World'd out. He and Tom could trade stories of the old days, go walking in the woods and eat good food, and generally take a long breather. Sort of like the day after you take the board exams; the last thing you want to do is rehash all the studying you did and what the questions were. All you know is that it's over, you're fine, and it's time to rest.

I suspect that Gandalf also related a few amusing stories about how puzzled people are by Bombadil's songs.

Oh, they probably talked about Tom's predilection for bright colors and Gandalf's preference for subtle tones like grey and white.

Tom: "I say, dear Gandalf, you would look smashing in yellow and blue."

Gandalf: "I like White better."

Good question , i suppose they discussed the War , AND fashion tips perhaps . As bombadil was once a ringbearer maybe Gandalf and he were discussing leaving ME (althought we do not know if he did or not ) . Perhaps it was just a meeting of friends and a mug of beer , mabye a thankyou visit or what have you ? :

I think that they told each other about what happened in there lives since the last time they talked. That would probebly take a while. Gandalf would perhaps try to persuade Tom and Goldberry to come with the ring barers over the sea. Tom would lauph and say "No, not yet! Tom still has to take care of Goldberry and Old man Willow!"

I would say yeah he would ask if he wanted to come to the west, though actually Gandalf must have known he would say no. He probably went for generic Chitchat, ate food etc. He probably said goodbye for a long time, I wonder how good friend they were? Maybe Gandalf wanted to see see Goldberry for a last time .

They probably talked about the Old Days, and how inaignificantly YOUNG all the hobbits and men and elves are. Elves? you say. Young? But yes, my friends, for Tom Bombadil and most definitely Gandalf were Maiar, and the elves are but mere baby imortal-ette-ling-shuns in comparison to them. perhaps they talked about how foolish everyone was, and how, since the downfall of Numenor, men had lost the ability to make up a good rhyme.
Oh well. whatever they talked about, it was probabky deeply intellectual, and whatever they ate (probably cheese and bread) was obviously deeply intellectually stimulating. Oh, joy!

Pipe

I think they would go walk through the forest, Gandalf with his pipe and weed, and Tom being his normal self singing songs of tales of the old.
Also i reckon that Gandalf would have been telling TOm all that happeened with Frodo, but Tom most probably already knew.
