Quote:
So the rumour of the wealth of Erebor spread abroad and reached the ears of the dragons, and at last Smaug the Golden, greatest of the dragons of his day, arose and without warning came against King Thror and descended on the Mountain in flames. (lotr Appendix A)

Prbably not but he was the last of the "great dragons" let me see if I can find the quote...

There were apparently at least some left after Smaug's death. Gandalf said to Frodo in FoTR:

Quote:
It has been said that dragon-fire could melt and consume the Rings of Power, but there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the old fire is hot enough.

Well that is a pretty hard question. For those who havn't read the books latly, they might have some trouble. But according to those quotes, (Thanks) they were still some left. Maybe a few still lived in the Nothern Waste and Angband. I wouldn't think there would be many dragons who could melt the ring. Maybe Smaug could. I'm sure Ancalagon and Scatha could.

Just for fun, I think I will give you some information on Ancalagon.

Ancalagon was known as the mightiest of the winged dragons of Morgoth. In a desperate assault, Morgoth unleashed the winged dragons. Ancalagon was the mightiest of these dragons, and with great thunder and lightning and fire, drove back the host of Valar. But Earendil came in Vingilot (ship) and with him was Thorondor and his Eagles. There was a great battle which took place between the two sides. It lasted all day long and most of the night, but just before sunrise Earendil slew Ancalagon. Ancalagon was cast from the sky and he fell upon the towers of Thangorodrim, which were destroyed beneath him.

First Appeared: During the War of Wrath
Name Meaning: Rushing Jaws
Race: Dragons
Also Known as: The Black

I got that from The Black Chasm. I'm not trying to advertize or anything, just give information. Look below.

Gandalf specificies that even the Old Fire of Ancalagon could not melt the Ring - for it was forged in the fires of Sauron and Orodruin.

Scatha the Grey, I believe, was a cold drake and hence had no fire to speak of.

Quote:
Have I said anything to suggest the final ending of dragons? If so it should be altered. The only passage I can think of is Vol. I p. 70 : 'there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the olfire is hot enough'. But that implies, I think, that there are still dragons, if not of full primeval stature.(letter 144)

I was always sad that all the dragons in Tolkien's works were evil...except the one in Farmer Giles of Ham of course. Maybe in the RPG I'll be a hobbit who morphs into a dragon.
