Shield Rohirric Knight question

A Rohirric Rider is fighting a mounted enemy. He's losing so he decides to get of his horse and fight the enemy from on the ground. Why would he do that?

The mounted enemy is a Nazgûl, and...uhh...he's really freaking scared of it, so decides to cower in a foxhole. Or maybe you're referring to Éowyn.

Is this really a quiz?

someone asked me this, and also gave the hints that it was for offence and the horse must be alive. this is for an individual rider

Erm... The rider is Merry, who was simply baggage on the horse, and once he hit the ground he could fight.

Or something.

Perhaps the enemy was mounted on something other than a horse?

The rider was Gimli with a Rohan helmet and shield, who obviously never battles on horses.

OR, that rider was Eorl, whose horse, Felarof, could speak, so he sent him to get help

OR, on a similar note, the rider knew that his fight is lost, and he sent the horse away so that at least the animal would survive (cause Rohirrim love horses) and maybe someone will recognize his horse and guess his fate...

The last one is kinda lame
