Legolas' Bow
Anyone want to help me with this one?
I've been arguing for ages with my friends about this - does Legolas' bow that he gets from Galadriel (sp?) have a name? I think it does, but right now we just call it the USBOD (Ultra-Spiffy Bow Of Destruction! ) I'd kinda like to know its true name. Legolas fangirls need to know these things! *goes back to singing the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins and reading The Two Towers* |

As far as I know Legolas's bow did not have a name, unless he gave it a private name the books failed to mention. Maybe he actually called it his USBOD, and whispered that to the bow as he was cleaning it....

It is very possible it had a name, swords and otehr weapons were given names, I think Beleg's bow had a name, but I may very well be mistaken. And being that he had just received it in Lorien, he may not have had time to name it.

Hullo, you might be right about that, but i don't recall a single bow being named in any of the books. Did Gimli's ax have a name?
You know what would be a waste of time: naming arrows. Can you imagine? "Windfalas!" "Asterial!" "uh.. arrarodriel.." "Oh bother - Bob" "Sam.." "Fred.." "Er.. Bob again" "Darned arrow" "dontmissthistime#*@@!" "bentscavenged-orc-garbage." [ December 09, 2001: Message edited by: Marileangorifurnimaluim ]

Beleg's bow did in fact have a name: Belthronding.

Suggestion for name of Legolas' second bow
Legolas' longbow, gift of Galadriel, would aptly be named "Cúthalion o Galadriel" meaning trusty bow, gift of Galadriel), or for short, "Cúthalion." I have a longbow that I have named Cúthalion in honor of Legolas.

My vote is for 'Beau'.
In Neo-quenya Veau. And yes, I apologize but I think it was kind of inevitable |

I have always loved this name, infact the character Beleg is one of my favourites. Such a faithful and honourable guy, it always annoys me to read how 'The outlaws' mistreated him and tied him to a tree!. And yet he still gives them his friendship and help.

Just as an aside point: Beleg did not only new his bow by name (Belthronding) but at least one of his arrows: Dailir

Yes Dailir was Beleg's feather-pinioned and snaketonguéd arrow that he always recovered unharmed, until as a sign of doom it broke under him after he carried Turin out from the Orc-camp and fell on it.
I can't remember if it is mentioned who gave it to him or whence it came.
