They all left their homes at some point for a long "journey", voluntarily or out of necessity, some for longer period than others and some never returned. But is that the right answer?? You tell me!

They all felt deep love/desire for someone/something (and it let them to a trouble of some sort)?
If that's not the right answer, and I'm preeetty sure it isn't, then could we have a small hint please?

Hurrah! You are correct, Lalaith. Well done.

In fact, those are all of the characters whose names begin chapters in TH, LotR and the Silm (my own library rummaging was done when I first set the question ).

Over to you ...

They gave away a jewel? Bilbo gave the arkenstone to the wood-elves and men (although it was eventually returned and buried with Thorin), Beren gave the silmaril to Thingol in exchange for Luthien's hand, Arwen gave the white stone to Frodo, Galadriel gave the Elessar to Aragorn... I can't find Aldarion's though

Are they all the sort of fathers of a race: Durin was one of the seven fathers of the dwarves, Fangorn one of the threee chief ents, Glaurung was father of dragons, telperion was the elder of the trees of Valinor, Ingwe and Finwe were two of the first three leaders of the elves? Or are they known as the "oldest"?

Bingo!

Finwe was the first slain in Aman
Ingwe was the first high king of the elves (his name also means 'first one')
Glaurung was the first of the dragons
Durin the first dwarf-father to awake
Telperion was the first tree to flower
Fangorn must have been the first of the ents if he was eldest...

Continue, Lalaith

Here we go:

Frodo
Galadriel
Legolas
Sam

This is a bit hard maybe so I'll give you two clues.
The answer is to be found within the text of Lord of the Rings. And there are others who also do this but they are not named specifically.
