Nilpaurion's present one is very funny, but so was one of his former ones:
Quote:
"But I already love you and despair!"
. Not that laugh out loud funny as his present one maybe but still made me smile.

I also like Fingolfin II's former signature, freshly laid to rest:
Quote:
"Reward on earth is more dangerous to men than punishment." J.R.R. Tolkien
I like it because it strikes a chord in me as I suppose it does in most of us who's had that happen to them.

According to BW it relates to a programming language or something technical and logical like that. So...her sig translates to To be, or not to be in a computer language or something.

Is this correct? *is afraid that I have just made a fool out of myself*

Also, bb reminds one of Bethberry.

How clever, Bb! Alas, I have not yet read Hamlet, so I did not pick up on BW's reference; rather, my English teacher sees fit for us to read the Crucible instead, which is sadly devoid of anything remotely poetic.

Boots Busy bs!

Thank you Encaitare for that link. And never fear about Miller's The Crucible; it is something which will also reverberate down the line. Many high school teachers shy away from doing Hamlet because of that soliloquy; they fear discussion of suicide.

And thank you, Helen for completing the translation which Imladris began. I was indeed playing with my nick of Bb and also being rather flippant about how we call ourselves here the dead.

If I may return the favour, about Imladris' sig:

Quote:
I peer into a mirror darkly.
While of course I don't know what kinds of things Imladris reads other than Tolkien and Harry Potter--or is that the othe way 'round? -- there is not only Alice's Through the Looking Glass but this metaphor from St. Paul. I give the line from the King James Bible--Squatter would be so pleased with me--and if you will forgive me, I will quote the entire chapter:

Quote:
Thought I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could move mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Charity suffereth long and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up.
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face; now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
I Corinthians, 13: 1-13, from the New Testament of the Christian Bible
Charity, in late sixteenth century English, meant love. Modern translations use the world love now.

Now, I'm sure no one was expecting a Sunday homily from me. I suspect there could well be other allusions to the dark mirror, or, rather, our incomplete perception. But, as Imladris suggests, we often use words which stay with us out of their own evocative sense rather than out of any conscious historical reference.

At the risk of being off topic (*gasp*), it's now Tolkien -- Pratchett -- Potter....I am deep inside the Silmarillion and I'm lovin' it -- though he could have abstained giving everybody a zillion names. Good thing there's an index. Fingolfin rules. Period, end of story. And poor Turin....

I was pondering myself on Bb's sig! I'm so happy I know what it refers to now -I'd never would have figured it out by myself! Very clever!

Right now I'm intrigued by Eomer's sig: "Green ideas sleep furiously." Any ideas what it may mean?

I vaguely remember it from a linguistics class - Noam Chomsky's example of a sentence which has correct syntax but semantically ... well it requires a few leaps of imagination.. It is an interesting thing that illustrates the complexity of language. " Black cats walk softly", has the same structure but is unremarkable.

Oh and many thanks for the explanation... the Hamlet I understand .. the rest ... not, probably in this lifetime. And "through a glass darkly" I knew - a very popular lesson at weddings and funerals (it features in "4 Weddings and a Funeral", )

My philosophy professor used it in an example. I think its great how the four words have absolutely nothing to do with each other. I am proud that it intrigued you Evisse, I'm happy to be making a difference.

Boots arousing random thought

A great link, Mithalwen! I too enjoy Eomer of the Rohirrim's sig--it got me thinking of ways I could relate the words.

But I think the analysis of Chomsky's sentence can go further:

Quote:
The sentence, "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously", was presented by Chomsky, as a great example of a series of words strung together randomly. Not only is it grammatical according to the lexical classification, and non-sense on a semantic level.
If words are grammatical, then they cannot be random. ' Adjective noun verb adverb' is not a random pattern in English. This is:

Noun article auxilliary adverb intensifier preposition verb adjective

River the can quickly more of walk big

(Well, I suppose you can argue that 'noun article', in deliberately reversing the noun phrase pattern, bears some link to the pattern and so is not random.) Okay, okay, this is getting off topic.

I happen to like Lalwendë's current sig very much:

Quote:
if I can but make the words awake the feeling
Now there's a writerly feeling that awoke my interest!

Pipe Syntactic Structures et al

Just quickly in response to Beebs,

The estimable NC has of course also made the point, through his own syntactical analyses, that there are linguistic universals that inhibit truly random behaviour in language structure. Language meaning, as posited by the angrily somnolent clear jade concepts, is not so constrained, as when the words used violate their contextual definitions. In any case, “Rabbits were running to the Eternity holding rainpipes in their mouths”*, which I’m sure you’ll all agree clears that up.

~ Rim, understanding what it is to sleep furiously.

Of course meaningless words can be grammatical ... "crucks thrick godges" for example, and "mome raths outgrabe" of course the latter is explained by Humpty Dumpty

This belongs to Carlas. Truly amusing; it sounds rather Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy-ish. Not sure if it is, but it sounds like it.

I particularly like Son of Númenor's new sig.

Quote:
A God, a God their severance ruled;
And bade betwixt their shores to be
The unplumb'd, salt, estranging sea.
Not only does its cadence haunt me, but its theme fits well with Tolkien and with Sono's own interests, his location, of course, "the last wave over Atalante".

Good pick, Sono.

I have been puzzled by Bethberry's sig for the days. I was thinking it has something to do with her name...until Nil cleared it up for me. A terribly witty one, Bb!

Speaking of Nil Felagund, I have always loved his multiple choice sigs. But I get to hear them before he uses it because...well...he's my brother. 'Nuff said.

Another amusing one is Encaitarë's E=F flat. Good thing I got this one this time.

Oh, and Guinevere's sig is just too true!

Indeed it does, Elennar. Yet another indicator of the Bowie craze sweeping through Crazy Captions and Crazy Scenes. w00t.

I enjoy the phantom's new sig. The legend indeed...

I liked Mithalwen's (now) old sig as well, Don't tamper with my genes! And, embarrassingly enough I cannot remember the name of the Downer with the sig Wolves did it, but I really liked that one too.

I've not been onto this thread before - and I see some curiosity about my sigs. Well, Wolves did it, that was me, and it's from my favourite comedy show.
if I can but make the words awake the feeling and heavy words are so lightly thrown are both from favourite songs I've been listening to a lot lately. But both are very different songs, from very different decades! I'll be impressed if you can spot 'em! Funny that both are about words, I didn't notice that! Typical...

I loved that conundrum by Bethberry; it reminded me of a fiendish crossword clue and had me befuddled for ages. I peer into a mirror darkly is another one that has had me puzzling.

I might check this thread out more often - darn, I missed a Chomsky discussion!
