I also find wilwa's very... erm... *searches for adjective* good. I'm not sure why. It's worthy of Captain Obvious, but it's so original and for some reason very attractive to me too.

I rather like The Ka's sig:

My hats off to that one!
That's a lovely sig. I find it rather enticing, not sure if that's the right word to use, but I'm using it anyway.

Glirdan... your most recent 500 posts have all been since the 12th of September, which is right about a month.

Remember, people, it's quality not quantity that matters.

Back in the day, when I was knee-high to Tom and went lily-pad surfing with Goldberry, and had just joined the forum, the thing to do was not to accumulate posts. People were snobbishly proud of having fewer than 500 posts and I seem to recall that Mister Underhill and burrahobbit and possibly Sharkû had a standing competition to see who could maintain forum flow with the fewest number of posts.

Like all stories of the past, however, that one tends to become somewhat idealised. Yet I do recall burra gleefully observing that poor Mister Underhill amassed a huge number of posts simply because he 'brought over' so many threads on the change of forum from UBB to vBulletin.

I can't recall if anyone ever had a signature about post count, though.

I refuse to go over 1000. Certainly not with pointless posts, eh? Eh? Oh.

To justify the post, I'll retire the Heine:

What saddened my mind all day;
An age-old tale confounds me,
A spell I cannot allay.

The problem with Rim's signature is that banality, like beauty, lies in the eye of the beholder. I certainly can understand that point of view when I consider how so much of England has become sort of a disneyfied theme park of days gone bye and when I recall all the tour buses I saw, their commentary controlled by satellite without even a live guide who was available to answer questions (whether intelligent or otherwise). Or when I think of Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, which imposes a very contemporary picture on what is alleged to be an actual historical re-creation.

Yet for those who have not lived in cities with two thousand years of history, and who live in cities which simply raze their historical evidences to make way for wider freeways and larger skyscrapers, who have no lived experience of walled cities or narrow winding streets or stone buildings or a culture with centuries of aristocractic dominance, what right does another have to say that the desire to see those things is mere banality or consumption or commodification?

It's what you make of what you take that counts.

And I'll come backwith an edit about signatures so this won't be off topic.

I totally agree...

There are thousands of tourists who go to Rome every year, and see all the same sights. This year, I was one of them...

While in general I do not care for the "banality of tourists", I went to pretty much all the normal sights that one sees in Rome: St. Peters, the Vatican Museum, Trevi Fountain, the Forum, the Coloseum, etc...

It was still a marvelous experience for me, spoiled as it was with crowds and vendors and fame. And not just the religious stops, which were as much pilgrimage as vacation, but also the places like the Coloseum, the Forum, or the Trevi Fountain, none of which have religious significance.

So while I agree with Rimbaud's signature's sentiment, I don't necessarily agree with the exact words. There are, after all, reasons that the tourist stops started attracting people in the first place.

And, on topic with signatures, I have to say that I've kind of become tired of the ++ Whatever the Poster Dislikes. It's still a good, short way of expressing irritation with something, but for the most part it has lost originality...

I've yet to discover the attraction of cows. They just aren't that big of a novelty, unless you're inexplicably curious as to what your dinner looks like before it's dead. There is absolutely no reason to park on the side of the road just to point out cows to your children. Surely the side of the road could be forgiven, but when out-of-state license plate adorned vehicles decide to stop in the middle of the road to admire the picturesque cows... I just don't get it. They simply aren't that fascinating. Which is why of the new crop of signatures I still really love Rimbauds.

I guess some city folks just can't wait for the cows to come home, Fea.

Well, as far as THAT goes... I have to agree completely. I have lived within a moo's distance of an Auction Mart for the last 4 1/2 years, and there is nothing romantic or interesting or even calming about a midnight orchestra of cows. Or pleasant smelling either...

And as far as tourists go, I have to say the best place to go tourist-watching is Banff National Park, a mere two hours from home. I don't mean to insult the Japanese by any means, but the place is overrun with tourists from that nation, and you can't see the forest for all the people. And the cameras!! The poor tourbus drivers have to stop for every gopher so that half the bus can empty and try and get a picture of the same animal that any prairie farmboy would swerve to turn into roadkill.

Yes, there is no accounting for tourists. Especially the kind like me who was one in Europe while decrying the ones who come to North America. I would like to plead the "Davem's Signature Plea" as my defence.

And, while still talking about favourite sigs, that has to be one of my favourites. It's certainly a great thing to have handy when one contradicts oneself.

Wooden Badger is not random. Somewhat inevitably it is Monty Python (and the Holy Grail)

Pio's:

. . . ’twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood/when blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form./Come in, she said, I’ll give you . . . shelter from the storm.
"When blackness was a virtue"... ooh, shivers. Whatever it's from, I have to read it.

Sooooo, Pio... what's it from?

Kinda sounds like Bob Dylan. Which I'm guessing who is in Pio's avatar, but I could be mistaken.

Yep, that's Bob Dylan. Pio, you rule.

Another signature I definitely vote for is Mithalwen's

I recently saw the Stones live and when they performed that song tears came to my eyes. And I wasn't even born when it was written (I think).

1420!

Yes, it's my dear Dylan's, "Shelter from the Storm", from his 'Blood on the Tracks' album.

Lovely poet . . .

I take it you understand then? I'm absolutely delighted. The one it pertains to has yet to figure it out...

Oh no, Fea. Not another of those meaningless sigs. Everyone's sick of those now.

Come come now, 'Mer. Just because you haven't cracked the code doesn't mean there isn't one. I just thought that I'd make it harder for him.

I'm very frustrated. I don't want to give too much away, but I think it may make a difference on which side of the Atlantic one is on, because there's just one vital bit of it that doesn't make any sense to me...
