Welcome to the Downs, Rekol.
Since Tolkien never describes the creatures in the book, this thread should probably be moved to the Movies forum. Although the question has been raised there once already: Are They Rhinos? In that thread, I speculated that their design is based upon the prehistoric mammal, Arsinotherium (and there's a link to some pictures). Hope that helps.

They explained the invention of the "great beasts" in one of the special features of the RotK EE. They did say that it was based on a prehistoric creature, could have been the Arsinotherium I can't remember.

Since this is a movie question, I'm moving the thread to the Movies forum. Please continue to read and post there. Thanks!
