Galpsi (aka Tom H.) has written another tough quiz. It's about Gollum and can be seen http://www.barrowdowns.com/barrowdowns/Quiz10.asphere first. This quiz will not be made available to non-forum visitors until the end of the week. Check it out and reply to tell galpsi what you think.

You're gonna need your books!

Have fun!

Again...http://www.barrowdowns.com/barrowdowns/Quiz10.aspthe Gollum Quiz can be found here.

Tough, very tough. Tried it without the books, and I`m ashamed to admit that I scored 2/10. I haven`t read LOTR for three or four years. Time to refresh my memory, methinks.

Look into the http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/library/classiccourt/77/Mirror of Desire.

Yeah this one is pretty darned hard. I did terribly on this one too. I'm going to have to make something a bit easer for the masses.

There is a Bilbo quiz coming out soon that hopefully isn't too tough (I haven't read it yet, but it looked easier than this one at a cursory glance).

I got a 50%. One of the questions can have more than on answer. The one about why Gollum led Sam and Frodo to Shelob. While him wantig the Ring is good, he wouldn't have done it if Sam wasn't so mean. Tolkien said so himself.

Burrahobbit,
I'm sorry to have made a question that couldn't be legitimately answered. I researched them carefully and brooded over them at some length to avoid this very problem. While I am sure that Gollum hated Sam, I can't place the passage you allude to where JRRT explicitly says that Gollum tried to have Shelob kill the hobbits so as to punish Sam. All the passages I can find show that the Ring is his overmastering motive. In fact, Gollum seeks to settle his score with Sam directly, by attacking him. Please tell me what I missed. It seems to me that he could have revenged himself on Sam or escaped his captive service easily without resort to Shelob. I understand that Gollum needed Shelob to kill Frodo so that he could get the ring without breaking his promise.
Sorry, it was meant to be challenging but fun.

Tolkien says it in Letters. but I don't know which one as I don't own the book. (btw, is Letters canon?)

The Letters are not canon and should not be cited as the source for quiz questions or answers unless it is specified that the Letters are being used (which they shouldn't )

Unless someone strongly disagrees (and we have a long discussion on the board that convinces us all otherwise) the quizes should come from The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.

Anything else must be specified and cited (in answers, too).

I am greatly dishonoured to say I only scored 30% on this quiz. Ron, you weren't wrong when you said it would be tough! I did try it without the books, and even though I have recently read Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, I still did terribly.
Some of the questions had really tackful answers. Take the question: Why did Gollum betray Frodo and Sam to Shelob". Instead of the answer just being 'The Ring', it was 'the rags and bones left over', because the ring was in the clothes.

Stop bickering, you two (By the way, how do you add those little faces to your replies? If I knew how to do it, I'd put a 'tongue' face here now.)! If it'll help, I meant that the questions had INTELLIGENTLY worked out answers. I should have been 'tactful', not 'tackful'.

Alternative words for 'Whinging': Whining, Nagging, Whittling, Arguing. 'Whining' is the closest to Whinging.
Now let us end this barmy talk <img src=mad.gif ALT=">:"> .

(Just to let you know and to stop any further 'Whinges' to this reply, 'Barmy' could also mean Mad, Senseless, Weird, or Pointless.)

I don't think that the way you are going about this is to your advantage. You might have better accused me of pedantry. The accusations of whining, of weak diction, and of general folly weren't your best case.
To answer your question, I grew up in an unsophisticated town of several hundred in rural North Carolina, where I was taught to consult the Oxford English Dictionary when confronted with obscure usage. Neither it nor I have entries for tackful or for whinging. Barmy I am all too well acquainted with.
