galadriel is evil?

when i watched the movie it made out that galadriel was kinda evil cos he said all who look at her would be under her spell or sumthing so why didn't frodo drop dead when he saw into her eyes? maybe she had a contact lens in.

Why on Middle-earth would Frodo drop dead from looking into her eyes? I don't understand. The Ring is evil, not Galadriel.

Well, I think we all understand that Galadriel is supposed to be drop dead gorgeous, but most of us don't take metaphors that literally.

I imagine anybody attempting to saw into Galadriel's eyeballs would experience immediate death. Strangely, I don't recall such a scene in either the book or the film.

Well, it's obivious that Frodo had a contact lens in. And it reflected Galardriel's death ray at somebody else. I've heard if you watch the movie, somebody behind Galadriel falls over dead when she looks at frodo but i'm not sur cuz i watched the fotr to long ago but thats what i herd so mayb its tru and ill go see if it is.

not very nice. . .

If I remember correct it was Gimli who said that all who looked upon her would fall under her spell. (or somthing like that)

As we all know dwarves is not known for there great knowledge about the Elves and whether they are evil or not. The point is as statet before that Galadriel is not evil, the ring is and she is tempted by it.

I believe in the book men of Rohan also talk about her as a wizardess (female-wizard if my English is failing me) as well. I believe that what was trying to be conveyed is that her beauty was so great it would change everyone who looked upon her somehow, but I don't think anyone would drop dead.

Also, in the movie I think they exagerate a little what happens when she is tempted by the Ring. From my reading in the book I take it that she wants it for a moment, but she never REALLY becomes that sort of monster that's shown in the movie. If anything, she imagines what it would be like and then rejects that thought as it would have been just as bad as Sauron taking over the world.

Finally, I must say that even if fairychick101's post was a little.... unconventional, we should not humiliate her, or make fun of what she wrote. If anything we should all show some class and PM her our issues with what she wrote yet try to keep the thread as polite as possible. I think she somehow brings up an interesting idea.

Is Galadriel (movie) shown as somewhat evil? I happened to watch the scene when she's tempted by the ring last night and she surely looks like someone you should be afraid of. Also, do you think that in the movie she reacts to the tempation in the same way she does in the book?

Let's try to make this thread a good one,

Farael

I'll have to read the book again, but I thought that in the book Galadriel had a reaction that was in between Gandalf's and Bombadil's. She dismissed it rather quickly even though she was tempted, and she was light-hearted about it.

I always liked the part where Frodo sees her ring...

Just cause Gimli said looking into her eyes would put you under a spell doesn't meen its a killing spell. I think he just meant that looking into her eyes would put you in some sort of daze because of her beauty. Or something to that affect.

Well Movie Galadriel seemed much more evil and sinister that Book Galadriel. Although Frodo noted her being a bit scary in the book before she "passed the test".

Well, actually the movie-Galadriel is somewhat "grey" character, at least for those not familiar with the book. My best friend, who has never read LotR, but has listened to me babbling about it for about eight years, asked me after seeing the movie: "What? Is Galadriel evil? I've always thought she was good. She's even one of your favourites, isn't she?"

Movie Galadriel seems somewhat more evil than book Galadriel. Instead of reading about her change when she is tempted we see it and for me that has a different affect. Because in the movie her voice changes as do her clothes and her look. In the books we only have the image our own minds show us and so she comes off as less evil.

But in the books outside of Lorien Galadriel is viewed as somewhat evil by the men of Gondor and Rohan. Boromir didn't want to enter the wood because the men of Minas Tirith feared her and the webs she weaved to ensnare men. Eomer felt the same way.

So not really evil in the books, but feared. Which is responsible because people tend to fear what they don't understand and make stories up about stuff. And men didn't really understand Galadriel so it's possible they viewed her as evil.

It is easy to see how in the movie though Galadriel can be taken for evil. But of course it is the Ring that is evil and Galadriel being tempted by it shows us a different side of her. Though even then I wouldn't call her evil.

And it isn't even so that in the movies she could be interpreted as evil; I think neutral is a better definition; she's not good, but not bad either.

Dwarves don't like Elves, so any Elf (especially powerful ones) would carry a stereotype or stigma with the Dwarves. I just chalked it up to Dwarf propaganda stories.

I think Galadriel was just momentarily taken by the power of the Ring. Peter Jackson was just trying to show how powerful the Ring is over someone who, yes, has that much power, but normally wouldn't use it for evil. The Ring used Galadriel to wield evil through her. That's what it was showing...I think...
