I donīt know but I can guess; Gnomes would be dwarves with an orcish aspect. Faires would be the Tinkerbell-kind-of-Elves

Fairies in Tolkien's early work was another term he used for the Elves in general. Gnomes was one of the names for the second kindred of the Elves, the Noldor, or in the Lost Tales Noldoli.
